Show us your kitty cats

Not bothering with insurance for ours, just going to put the equivalent funds into savings. Cant find any that give a sensible plan for cats kept indoors, risk has got to be massively reduced.

Just got ours playing fetch now as well will bring the ball back every time now.

If you haven't already, check Animal Friends Insurance out. I'm paying £6 a month for our 8 year old indoor cat. It's barely anything and gives us peace of mind should anything happen.

If you want a new kitten to bond with the resident cat, is getting a kitten as young as possible the best way?

I got Bruce when Lola (and Dave when he was with me) were just over 3 years old. Bruce was a very confident 8 week old kitten which definitely helped. Lola and Dave threw their toys out for quite a few weeks (Dave stropped off for over a week at one point and I ended up having to lock him in as I was moving house) but they all sorted themselves out in the end.

Since I lost Dave, Lola and Bruce are definitely closer, not to the point where they cuddle up together but they will now play together. Lola is definitely the boss and Bruce accepts that, he's submissive in the right way, but isn't a push over. He just knows when Lola has had enough and leaves her alone.

Having Bruce around when Dave died definitely helped as it meant Lola wasn't alone :)

To give you an idea of costs you'd need to be prepared for:

Recent leg operation for Feeb: £1400
Last trip to vet for diagnosis, palliative care and euthanasia: £850

Was also potentially faced with a high thousands figure for neurological referral. My insurance policy had a £2500 limit for single incident payout at £12pm or thereabouts.

That seems insane amounts of money, i would be hard pressed to justify it and i love my pets.

The joys of veterinary care, and the necessary use of emergency vets I'm afraid.

Put it this way: your animal is ill out of hours, and can't wait for care. You're then asked to make the call on a potentially expensive decision that could mean the difference between you animal living, dying or prolonging or shortening their suffering. Whether you shoulder the cost yourself, or have peace of mind that you have a policy in place to cover the cost you know you can make that decision quickly at a difficult time.

Ultimately it's better to not have to foot thousands yourself, so I'd lean towards insurance every time now. If we do get another kitty I'll be pushing for a top tier policy too, as recent experiences have shown its a terrible time to have to even think about cost.

you reckon..

one of our indoor cats got stress related (persistent fireworks) bladder infection that took over £700 of tests and treatment to shift.

i wouldn't say being indoors is any way safer when it comes to illness or accident.

for what it's worth petplan paid with no quibble and aren't that expensive.

Regards the fireworks, we found it interesting that ours ran straight to the window and sat watching the lightning the other night, right above the house as well thunder shacking the windows and setting off alarms. He looked happy as larry.

Think i will go with one of the lower Animal Friends plans, treatment for 12 months upto £2k. Save the difference into savings should we need more.

its weird as the more extroverted of ours hates hoovers, fireworks etc. the one that is a complete pansy and will hide when strangers come over is fine.
