The S will be massively more expensive i would imagine. I know the warranty cost on my SL is absolutely eye-watering, to the point where you'd never bother.

After your 530d, and if circumstances allow, you should buy an approved used 7 series.

Nope, as Jez said the aftermarket costs are pointlessly excessive on them.

Mechanically there is almost no difference between a later F01 730d and an F10 530d. The same ZF8HP gearbox. The same engine. The same infotainment system, heck much of the chassis is the same. They are mechanically as near as makes no difference for warranty purposes identical. The first 3 years of F01's are actually a bit simpler as they have the much older 6 speed box in them from the E60 rather than the 8!

Yet the warranty on a 7 Series is almost twice as much as the already not exactly cheap warranty on a 5 Series. I briefly considered an F01 when I got the F10 as they were similar money but it was just ridiculous.

I don't mind the concept that a genuinely more complex or less reliable car costs more money to run. But I don't feel that's the situation with the 7. I've found my niche - I absolutely love F10's :D

Surely you'd be looking for a 750i and not a 730d though? Obviously the warranty would still be extortionate, but there's a lot more 750s around than 550s and it would be something different to your 530d.

I've no interest in something like a 750i really. For me the appeal of a car like this is that you actively *want* to get into it and drive huge distances and part of that is being able to do so with a significant tank range and a fuel bill that doesn't make you really need to crack out the man maths calculator to justify not giving Easyjet your money.

I didn't want a 530d but now I've got one I've become rather fond it's breadth of ability. It's almost as quick as my 335i was really and yet I was able to drive to Germany and back on about 80 quid worth of fuel :D

The only thing that still bugs me about it is the lack of refinement when cold. I wish it was a later start/stop example as thats when you really notice its a diesel. The rest of the time it's genuinely smooth, refined, quick and whilst it doesn't sound 'AMAZING' it actually does't sound that bad either.

Is there some Purchase Justification Syndrome in there? Probably. But I actually really like this engine now.

It's the only diesel engine I'd have though - A few months ago I put 500 miles on a 420d and the engine is just awful.

Yes, but mine is the 245bhp variant not the 258bhp.

Ah ok. I've done quite a few miles in one and it is a very good engine, though I wouldn't say in terms of general refinement I found it miles better than a 520d (admittedly it was a new one). Not a huge X3 fan though really.

There is a huge difference in the F10's ability to isolate you from NVH than the 'lesser' models in the range - I found the 420d absolutely awful in terms of refinement yet exactly the same engine in my Dad's LCI 520d is noticeably better (Though still not great in terms of power delivery etc).

That's fair enough tbh: I know I definitely don't take my car abroad as much as I would if I had a 530d or similar. I just think I still need a bit more time to get over you not hating all diesels :p

I've become really keen on taking it abroad and want to do so more often - so far we've been to Germany, Netherlands and Ireland (and Scotland :p) in it and I'd like to drive down to Italy later this year. These are trips I'd probably just fly+rent for if it didn't sip cheap continental diesel @ 45-50mpg :D

70 on the cruise gives me between 45 and 50 depending on weather/traffic/etc. I do find that wind makes a huge difference, I do the same trip fairly often and it can vary by about 5mpg depending on the wind speed

It's only doing 1450rpm @ 70mph.

I'm not sure I could be disciplined enough to stick to 70 on a long trip through Europe, I tend to set the cruise to 90/95. Can't argue with that economy though.
