Show Us Your Motors!

The fact I didn't do that this time was on purpose. I didn't much fancy starting a thread which went "So you all remember my Celica disaster... Well I've bought a new car! Here it is arriving on the back of a recovery truck, it has some electrical faults, doesn't have an MOT, and I'll let you know what its like once I've actually driven it!" Because I know how that would have gone! So I decided to post about it once it was all fixed and had a few hundred trouble free miles on it. :D

The list isn't long anyway... Aside from possibly sorting out the rails, I'd like a louder intake and perhaps Gaz coilovers. Thats pretty much it. I am chopping up my old Celica intake to use. Just needs a couple of inches cutting off, and a hole drilled for a sensor.

I'll be fitting MK2.5 rear lights and replacing the cumbersome front plate mount with a stick on plate. Might get a non EU plate for the back (I think they look neater) :)

A few of you already know so I might as well fess up, I've had this since September. :p

It is a 1998 MX5 1.8iS (the one with the 140HP non VVT engine and the Torsen LSD)

Credit where it's due, it looks like you have done pretty well there.
Other than the rust, is there anything else you are planning on doing to it?

Thanks! Possibly a couple of things as in my above post which I've edited 1000 times as usual. :p

Intake, maybe suspension, lights, plates. :)

Don't bother with the intake, commonly known fact that removing the stock crossover pipe causes a dip in midrange torque. Just drill the airbox for more noise

When you say crossover pipe, do you mean the bit which goes from the throttle body across the engine bay to the MAF?

I was going to get rid of the airbox and the snorkel and then put in a U bend and a cone filter where the original snorkel opening is. Like in this crude drawing. :p

The end of the U bend goes straight on the MAF where the stock airbox would have been, with a rubber joiner, then it would just be a case of drilling a hole in the pipe for the other sensor (I hope!) - I tried it mocked up earlier and it sounded fantastic, but the car wasn't happy because the sensor was unplugged.

Nice Acme. Being a UK car I would get that rust treated and waxoiled. Shame you're not up north as I know a man for the job.

Racing Beat cat back plus a cone filter are great for a sporty sound. Torsen LSD.

I miss my MK1 ;( RWD isn't scary in the MX5 with stock power. With a Torsen LSD you can mostly mat the pedal mid corner and have no dramas. They're very tyre dependant though. I had 8" wide wheels on mine as well as Meister R coilovers.. The stock 14" wheels produced some moments but only in wet conditions. MK2 wheels aren't like stock M1 wheels I thin kthey're wider yours certainly look so. Don't be afraid to find the limits slowly it won't bite you. Just be sensible about it :)

That'll work.

Correct on the crossover pipe, it's designed to have a specific resonant frequency to flatten out a drop in torque at a specific RPM

Good to know, thanks. :)

I do need to get it treated underneath, I need to decide if I want to have it just rust treated for now, or if I want to have it rust treated and have the chassis rails done at once... Its quite expensive to do the rails, so I need to figure out if its going to be a long term or short term thing!

If for the time being I cover the rails in ditrinol and squirt the insides with copious amounts of cavity wax, will that stop them from getting worse, or is that not how it works? I guess it will at the very least delay the process?

It has Toyo Proxes T1R's all round in the stock size. Apparently they aren't very good in the wet.

It's at times like this that it makes me question my new decision to sell the Alfa.

Sad to see it go, but occasionally the head wins over the heart. I know very little about Alfas in general, let alone specific models, but your GTV always raised a smile for me.

I'll wait until I've seen it in person in a carpark with some straight lines either side that I can look at the reflection of, but dare I say it that actually sounds like an decent buy! Who are you and what have you done with Acme?! :p

Haha that is fair enough! And thanks!

I'm still the same Acme, as proven by the fact that I edited my previous post about 20 times... :p

Loving your new car too... Lucky chap... Work hard play hard I suppose. :)
