Can't argue with that.

I've been watching the prices for years, £40k down to £30k for ropey examples, seem to have levelled off a bit now but impossible to say where it's going to go next.

Mine was £37k, manual V8, 50k miles, FSH with recent clutch, had new discs and pads, mag-ride dampers, all 4 alloys refurbed, and the front bumper resprayed. Also got a 12 month warranty package, which we'll see is worth the paper it's written on.

Plan is to keep it for a year, use it, enjoy it, and move it on with whatever value they're at by then.

Man maths tells me at worst it'll be worth £30k, any less and I'll likely keep it longer.

If yours is a manual, I think your totally safe, certain cars have bottom or not moved up much from the bottom. They are safe buys and as with all these cars they generally always recover from a drop, so if you like it then just continue enjoying it for a few more months until things pick back up or the buyer for your car/spec comes along.

Thing is cars like these wont ever be built for much longer and to a degree manuals have almost gone from the new market so if you can find a decent clean none ropey one then I think the price now is as low as they will go.

They will then slowly start going up in value. Same with Aston Martin DB9s esp manual. They have bottomed out at around £40k and will no doubt only go one way - up.

I'm not saying the car will increase in value more than your annual maintenance costs are but at least depreciation shouldn't be another cost to worry about.

I remember reading a few years ago an article on the s2000 saying decent ones can be bought for £10k to £11k and should be a future classic. they are £20-£25k now.

The R8 was a game changer for Audi and as such it should be a future classic.

This is mostly my philosophy with it, I keep saying it's the safest stupid idea I've had.

Cost wise thus far seems reasonable. I've only had it a month but in terms of fixed costs, £400 a year to insure, and £50 per month for tax - my Beemer is £300 and £35 respectively, so not huge jumps there. Mpg is obviously the big one but again, my E92 does 23/24mpg, so it was no Prius itself. Which leaves consumables and repairs, which hopefully, will be few and far between. If it needs be the warranty will be called into action and failing that, there's reserves to keep her running pretty.

It's been a tough old year, I lost my mum in January, and other massive family issues have ensued since. However, I also became a qualified chartered accountant (two days prior to mum's passing, which she was over the moon with); I appreciate there's man maths and this probably sounds like I'm "explaining" myself, but y'know, life literally is far too short, and the mid-engined V8 beckons.

you enjoy it pal. :)

That's interesting, I went to look at a 300ZX today!

That place is about 5 minutes from my house!

They've had a few interesting cars there recently. I really liked the RX7 drop top they had a while back but I really don't need another car in my life!

It's about 4 hours from my house :(

The owner is selling up a fair few of his personal collection, including the 300zx. We had a sneak peak in his shed where he has many old cars including a <1967 mustang that my Dad got quite excited about.

Honestly, this realisation drives a lot of people into similar decisions. Sorry to hear about your Mum and other issues but similar to me, it puts your long term vs short term choices into sharp relief. You might not even have a long term. Best to enjoy these things while you can.

Unless you’re Scrooge McDuck and you can *actually* swim in your own money somehow, having piles of it in the bank is the least enjoyable way to enjoy whatever money you’ve earned. That’s my opinion anyway :)

Enjoy the R8 to the full!

i do too, whats it called again Gibbo ?

Volcano red, it was never an option on 600LT judging by the option sheets I’ve been sent so I guess first owner was like I want that colour make it happen.

Thought be a bit dark for my taste but in person it totally won me over it’s like liquid and may sound daft but reminds me of the Renault liquid yellow paint they did on the V6 Clios but in red, stunning and I guess it’s why McLaren won’t release paint codes so no one can steal their colours.

It’s bonkers quick too, in my Mrs words this is terrifying lol.

Once LR decides to play ball I'll have some more, better quality photos but for now I think this one shows off the colour really well. When the sun is shining and it catches the light it transforms into a very deep, glossy red. When the light isn't quite right, it is a much darker colour. I reckon at night, lit by city lights this will look beyond incredible. Anyway, for now:

Hard to believe that the door and the bonnet are the exact same colour...

Things you can't tell from these pictures:

  • How deep the shine/flake combo makes the paint look. It looks wet, almost like you could scoop some of it off with your finger. Incredible and much underrated colour IMO. Genuinely makes my Papaya Spark look ordinary by comparison!
  • When accelerating - not even full chat - the heat haze that rises up from those top-exit exhausts becomes a rooster-tail of mangled air. Even going slowly in traffic it looks like it is going crazy fast. Bonkers.
  • MSO Gloss Black black bits (same as on mine ;) ) completely sets this car apart from the standard "palladium" black bits on most other McLaren cars. It looks *perfect*. IMO it is even better than exposed carbon which is a bit overplayed now. It looks seriously, seriously clean and shiny with it done like this. Hats off to the person who spec'd this from new as I think it is probably the best example of a 600LT I've ever seen.
