Does it have that rank smell Volkswagon seem to use on all their new cars?

The company car I drove to London last week was a new Golf and I had to break out a spare Magic tree from my car just for the drive up there else I'd collapse from the smell. Even that was just about enough though.

I am not a extrovert and do not want a hugely OTT showy car.

Couldn't agree more. Oh, wait :(

Tried a couple of 335s - finding a manual was difficult, and the only one I did find didn't really have the spec I wanted and was pricey at 32k. Power delivery is a lot more linear and less 'raaaaar' than the m3, but I don't think the m3 is massively quicker is it?

Very capable, purrrty and misunderstood (by every GTi owner....) car you have there :D

EXACTLY, my point is that if I put parking sensors under the same heading?

The observation is that it's okay to buy something if one wants it, the test for whether it is useful or not doesn't apply. It seems odd. Even when the cost is ridiculous.

nobody said it wasn't ok for you to fit parking sensors

If you want them. Then go ahead and fit them. However you started a thread asking for opinions. And you get them.

The general consensus was that they are a pointless on a car the size of the yaris and that if we owned a car of such a size we'd have no need for them.

But thats our preference. If you have a different preference - go ahead and fit them. One of the best things about this forum is that not everybody has to have the same opinion. Because you can bet that if fox paid £3k for alloys, yes lots of people would be like OMG wow, there would be just as many saying he's stupid for spending 3k on wheels. That's what great about life - not everybody holds the same views.

I was going to come in here and say that Fox's car is very nice and was looking forward to a proper thread and is tipping me over the edge of borrowing a bit of money selling mine, dipping into savings and buying something less dull but the I see all out handbag swinging has commenced so I need to balance my comments by saying I don't like something so at most it'll have to be the bank of blank switches? that's a nice car and I hope you enjoy it.

I'm really lazy and was hoping you'd by another 5 so I could just copy your spec but the 3 door doesn't suit me or my needs, shame, can you take it back and buy a 5?

I hear you. To be honest, it's part of the appeal. I like the fact it's just a normal 3 Series. It has normal 3 Series running costs. It has normal 3 Series repair costs. It looks like a normal 3 Series. I am not a extrovert and do not want a hugely OTT showy car.

I honestly think the random spec is the best thing about it. If it had all the spec then:

a) It would have been more than I wanted to pay or much older
b) It would likely not have had CIC nav - all the high spec 58 plate cars seem to have the old iDrive, presumably as they were sold from stock rather than built to order.

I completely agree. I am not going to spend £3200 on alloys, ever. I like the BBS LM but I absolutely will not spend 3 grand on wheels, its completely stupid.

New wheels are a priority though, or at the very least new tyres, because the current setup ruins the car.

Is it just me or do you not quite have the same passion for this car as the E39?

It seems like its a head rather than a heart purchase and there are various things that you arent entirely happy with, this seems surprising given your interest in cars and the time you have spent considering your options before buying.

I may be completely off the mark and please ignore me if I am but I have read enough of your posts over the last few years of lurking!

Unless I have been mistaken, Fox has always been a head over heart kind of guy.

So you've driven one smelly golf, a company car no doubt used by colleagues etc., and deduced that all vw's therefore stink?!

Lolkhaaan!

I don't think I will ever own another car that generates the passion I have for the E39.

When I bought the E39 literally the only flaw I could find in the entire car was that the cupholders were a bit crap.

Whether this was because it was my first decent car or not I don't know, but I doubt I'll get the same feeling again when buying a car.

Thread has lacked pictures of motors for the last few pages, can we have some please?

Can do! I fully expect this to get buired under the mountain of sexual tension in here, but I try!

Neither are new, but I will never part with either.

This, however, is new and shiny.

Hmmm the difficult 2nd album is it? Does look nice, I like the subtlety of it as it shouldn't get you too much negative attention.

 That looks immense!
