it was a nightmare to deal with as the cisco switch was always full and would take about 40 minutes to free up ports. people used to unplugged cables but not remove them

I think I'd make a start by using a pair of garden shears to remove the old cables.

That site is ever so handy, specially when they post break downs of corporate networks, listing there country, physical location and even go into detail about vlan assigment and ip addressing...clever.
