Sick of waiting for NVidia refresh...

No thread isn't about that at all. The thread is about NVidia taking too long to release next gen so that those of us who bought a 4K screen over 18 months ago can actually start to enjoy games on it without having to buy multiple GPUs to run in SLI which is buggy as hell and soon to be obsolete. I was never comparing console to pc - I want to game and I can game on the XBox One X with a more pleasant experience than I can on a PC currently without buying 1080Ti's in SLI only to have a new 11** come out in 3-9 months which will do the same job for a lot less money.

Your thread got hijacked by people making it about consoles being exactly the same as PC but cheaper. I am curious though, if you had a 980ti and a 4k screen, why did you not get a 1080ti when they first came out, to maximise your usage of it? Why is it over a year later that you've suddenly decided you need a new GPU and its somehow nvidias fault they havent released a new one when reportedly the new memory isnt even available yet? Going off history the xx80 isnt a big jump over the previous ti so not only are you waiting for the next gen but actually the next gen ti, which was never going to be a March 2018 affair?

I completely get why someone wouldnt buy a 1080ti now with new GPU's closer. I don't get why someone who obviously values buying on launch day would say they were considering buying a pair of 1080ti's but got a console instead.

I don't think currently it's too long. If you look at previous releases, and without looking myself in more detail, I'm sure it was about 2 years Maxwell to Pascal, we are however in the zone where new cards are due anytime now. I still say end of June for first new cards of next gen and will be very surprised if nothing arrives by Sept at the latest, and a bit miffed too :D

I didn't buy 1080Ti because this machine was a hackintosh and MacOS did not support 10** cards when I built it so I bought the best card I could support at the time which was the 980Ti with liquid cooling. I only used windows (dual boot) for gaming and wasn't gaming very often due to work so it wasn't as issue.

I then (within a 3-4 month period) became an owner of 3 MacBook Pros and no longer needed to use my Hackintosh (I could dock my MBP and use them on a different input on my screen) so I reinstalled this system to be used just for Windows around November by which time GPU prices were already through the roof and next gen was expected in Q1 so there was no point buying SLI 1080Tis.

When I started gaming again I noticed that a 40" 4k screen without good GPU for gaming was a terrible experience - having to turn down the graphics quality when sat 40 cm from such a large screen just wasn't pleasing to me - so I stopped gaming entirely and gave my 980Ti to my wife who only games at 1080p and went back to my 390X since I am not gaming on my PC at the moment.

As soon as next gen is released (Ti) I will of course buy it and will resume gaming on my PC. I will continue to game on the XBox One X too because it is just nice to do sometimes and can be a fun experience when you have friends round, or want to play with friends online who only have consoles. The cost of gaming on the XBox One X is actually incredibly cheap. I got 4 months free access to Game Pass when I bought the console and for another 29 Euros I got 1 year access to EA's equivelant - which immediately gives me access to about 150 games (and no they are not all crap).

I am currently enjoying my XBox experience - I will always be a PC gamer but until the hardware becomes available to enjoy the experience again, I will enjoy the XBox. I am not going to sit here and say consoles are better than PCs or PCs are better than consoles - it is a fruitless argument and completely subjective. All that matters is you enjoy the experience and currently, I am enjoying the XBox experience far more than I was enjoying the PC experience, I have zero doubts that will change later this year.

It would be nice if people focused on the actual topic of the thread instead of hijacking it for their own (completely irrelevant) agendas.

Noted and thanks.

Sorry that you seem to have been cast as the poster boy for "deathof pc gaming is nigh, everyone is switching to console"

I did try to point out that you were probably going to buy a new nvidia card anyway but just got shouted down.

I went with the XBox One X specifically because many of the games I play are buy once play on PC or XBox - so when NVidia get their fingers out of their asses and release new hardware, I can come back to my PC and keep playing the games I enjoy without spending more money.

Allowing people who buy their games to use them on either platform sounds like a good offer but I'll still have my gaming PC so the Playstations only going to be for buying games that are console exclusive.

So far I have 4 Playstation exclusives. I'll still be buying upcoming games like State of Decay 2 and Metro Exodus on PC, While PS exclusives like Days gone will be gotten for that. This way I should have access to just about every upcoming game out there. That said I haven't ruled out getting an XbX at some point if they go back on their word. :D

i did exactly the same with my pro... i have about 15 titles for it (which of course i never play much like my 500 untouched steam and 30 untouched oculus games). forgetting petty playground arguments, naughtydog make some top notch games and yes they would technically be nicer on a top spec pc, but that isnt an option.

the last of us, horizon ZD, shadow of the collosus, uncharted ........ pentology? (I may have made that word up) drive club, gameplay wise match anything of those genres on pc imo, and in terms of production values are far more polished than most games.

Thats great, but this isn't the console section, there is another section of the forum or whole other forums for console players to gush over each other with stupid hyperbole.

I think you will find the op bought a console due to gpu prices and a lot of the talk in this thread is about console, there merits due to price and games. If you don't like this thread maybe you should not comment.

I bought my PS4 pro along with a 4k TV and together they cost less than the high end Vega & Pascal gpu's which made going with a PS4 a no-brainer, The only thing I dislike about consoles is using a controller with first & third person games but I grabbed a Xim Apex which lets me use my mouse and keyboard with it and it does a great job, you have to set it up on a game by game basis but they provide ready made templates for each game so all I have to do is tweak it a bit.

Nope, read his latest post in this thread.
He says its you guys that have hijacked his thread.

Nope, read his latest post in this thread.

Read the Op as that's what dictated this thread and not a latest post.

Talks about buying an Xbox one x due to increased gpu prices. Thread talks about the merits of buying a console instead of overpriced gpu's and op says thread is hijacked. The thread is going in the exact direction it was always going to go. People are not happy with current prices and I am sure you have seen plenty of chatter around here lately about high prices and gamers thinking about switching to console due to it.

People have been whinging about gpu prices for at least 10 years, I'm not expecting that to change, i also don't see why people riling up age old "console vs PC" wars should be seen as acceptable on a PC forum either. See previous examples.

People should be capable of putting their opinion across without resorting to ad hominem attacks and openly stating they will ignore what someone has actually written in order to create big long strawman posts. But here we are.

The whole thrust of "the argument" in this thread was "hey, this guy gets it, see people are giving up PC gaming entirely to switch to consoles"... but as I tried to point out and he has now clarified, he's bought a console (with Extra money) to wait on a new xx80ti. So not at all what people have been arguing, the complete opposite in fact.

Summary

1) High end GPU prices aren't going to become more affordable in the short term

2) Buying an Xbox 1 is your prerogative, even spending half as much on a 1080Ti would likely get you a better experience.

3) New cards coming Q4

I don't like current GPU prices, probably one of the reasons why I haven't upgraded my 980, which to be honest still serves me well but I will never buy a console if that means I will have to play console games only, and have to use a controller. Not even with GPU prices at £500 for a 1070 level graphics card.

You don't have to use a controller. Xim4 allows you to use Keyboard and mouse. Your current build is still fine to play at 1080p on mostly ultra/high so if you don't like the console exclusives just keep enjoying your PC. I game on every system apart from Xbox atm. Using a controller to me is better for some games over keyboard and mouse but in those that it ain't I just hook my mouse and keyboard up to the xim4 and play like I do on the PC.

I did try a xim on an xbox something (360 i think it might have been, it made COD look like lego COD anyway) and the input lag was atrocious, has it improved with newer versions? Or can you really tell anyway when playing at low fps?

So a refresh purely to cause a dip in the prices of older hardware, or a refresh to get an improvement in performance? Given the stats on what cards people are using on Steam these days, the prices of those more popular GPU's are approaching normal once again. It looks like the price hikes are more enthusiast (and AMD) targeted...1060's are approaching MSRP these days(which isn't great for old cards but it's better than what we've had). But in reality, for most people and most games those mid range cards are going to be fine, and will be fine for the immediate future. Might it be that in the next generation of GPU's there's a greater disparity in pricing between top and mid tiers?

Awesome, thanks man. Hope you're keeping well by the way :)
Doing my best thanks....still got some work woes, but doing my utmost to find some alternatives. And If you have the cash Humble Monthly is a great proposition for your Steam Library.

Most games I use it with have a constant 60fps so fps ain't an issue. I don't notice any input lag what so ever and it's pretty close to the PC experience. Needs some tinkering to get right though in some games. Used it for the last few Cods and swbf1/ 2 with no issues. I never tried earlier models so can't comment if there was major improvements.
