Sigma 35mm f1.4....?!!

Not getting the vanilla 800 anymore? :D

Still undecided but probably I will go all out for the E. the problem I foresee is that the price of the vanilla d800 will drop faster and have more offers than the E version.

The d800 will be largely for landscape work so th extra resolution is nice to have and I am unlikely to ever experience moire.

I don't know how it would blow it away really, real the bokeh should be buttery-er but I can't see how it can out-resolve the Sigma given that the Sigma is so well controlled and so sharp and good control of optical issues (CA/Fringe). It should match it in all respects.

I always thought the current 35L was weather sealed too, didn't realise it wasn't! So the new version should add weather sealing I guess?

I wouldn't be surprised if the new canon is slowly softer than this sigma but the overall rendition willbe very pleasant.

i heard this sigma lens max f stop is f16?

The canon one may be way above that making it sharper and better for landscape shots

How will that help landscapes when the sharpness is second to none at all apertures anyway?
I shoot landscapes myself and can't remember the last time I used an aperture above f16!

I agree it's important for lenses that aren't as sharp but for this? No problem.

They probably have their own reasons but as said, f8-11 with a decent lens = perfectly sharp.

I guess if they're not using a wide angle but instead a mid then they'd be using a narrower aperture to counter the dof...maybe.

(I know it was a tongue in cheek comment, but just to clarify)
Large formate isn't anywhere near as aperture constrained. Also if your not dealing particularly dense high resolution mediums (sensor/film), your not going to be diffraction limited.
To help get around the DOF issue, you can use a tlit-shift or learn to focus stack.

I understand that. Was merely a tongue in cheek comment as you've said! :)

Still not in stock. Is it worth getting the Sigma 85mm now or shall I wait for the refresh?

It's worth getting the Sigma 85 now considering we don't know how long it will take for a refresh. There is barely any need for improvement (it really is a good lens). The only shame is you can't calibrate it yourself like the 35, but sending it in for calibration isn't a big deal if it's under warranty anyway. Chances are you won't have to, and if it's only slightly off, you may as well just adjust it with Micro adjust/AF finetune if your body has it.

Ordered. Purchased from ******* which is £40 cheaper than one stop.

Going to be a long wait!

Edit: hmmmm censored...

Bugger, just got a reply saying they're out of stock and don't know how long it will take to source one.

This is like gold dust this lens.

Oh damn :(

Who else has one on here/anywhere UK?

I can't be the only one! I've been using it 95% of the time flicking between it and the 85. I have not used the 17-40 for groups yet (40 end) - 35 seems perfect indoors and the resolution just wins.

Just liaising with them about how quickly they can source one. Their phone lines are straight to answer phone and their email support is slow.

Really need a nice 35mm soon for some journo work...damn...do i get the canon one... :( £889...

Think I'm going to cancel my order. Change of circumstances and need something wide.

16-35mm F/2.8 II may be on the cards!
