Sigma 35mm f1.4....?!!

High quality is still absolutely rubbish with massive amounts of compression - it's just slightly higher resolution.

I have not seen this massive amount of compression at all in any of my images.

I do wonder if sigma have to use a slightly different optical formula though due to the different mount?

I don't think the optics change much at all. Nikon has a larger flange distance, I think one of the largest around. Therefor, 3rd parties will make a lens that supports the Nikon mount in mind. For a Canon or Sony version they basically just need a blank spacer- extend the lens barrel. This is why you can mount Nikon lenses on a Canon body easily but the inverse is harder.

Maybe some of the lens elements are moved slightly, but the optical formulas will remain the same.

It doesn't seem so bad in this example but particularly if you look in the backgrounds, the facebook version has a lot of compression in the subtler tonal changes. It's like this on most images - whenever there's a subtle change in tonality facebook tends to butcher it pretty hard. This shows up really badly on stuff like cross processing or flared scenes.

Anybody here used Mathers of Lancashire before? They have the lowest price on CameraPriceBuster but I'm not sure if they sell grey import stock as they're not on Sigma's website as a dealer.

Maybe, but they are normally cheaper than onestop anyway, onestop are not very good if you need to return a lens, they start trying to resist and ask you to send your camera body to the manufacturer along with the lens, if the manufacturer doesn't find a fault (doesn't always mean there isn't one) they will charge you.

Hmmm... Where should I get it then? I definitely need it within the week, but the non grey import versions are £760 unless the Mathers place is selling UK stock.

DR are always very quick though, so I should at least have it by next weekend? Hmmm I'll still have the 5d and 50 1.4 so in a pinch that'll do as my wide prime.

Just about to pull the trigger on a D800, 85 1.4D (I figure Sigma will replace theirs as soon as I buy one of the current models, and I'd rather not faf about with dud copies at this point. Love my one on my 5D but the build of the 85 D is very tempting), 35 1.4 and Tokina 100 2.8 (decided to go with that over the Tamron 90). God this is exciting :)

The 18-55 will replace my Sigma 24 on Canon. The aperture and mfd was very nice on it, but tbh given 99% of my usage for it was random landscapes I can deal with it.

Easier yes, but the 35 is something I pretty much need for most of these shoots and I'm not gonna buy one on a system I'm just about to leave. It would be easier to get a 5D3 but your blasted raw files convinced me I definitely needed to move back. As I'm still at school I don't get a hell off a lot of time to do personal work shoots so 5 in one week is massive for me and due to the scale of a couple of them, it would seem a waste to get the D800 later rather than sooner.

As or the 85, I have heard that the 85G is more accurate but then the Sigma isn't massively accurate either. The 85D is more proven as a pro lens so I'm inclined to go with that.

And a Nikon strap, best of both worlds :)

I've used the 85G (on D800), it's good but I think the AF on my Sigma 85 feels faster.

Yeah the 85G is meant to be quite slow but slap bang accurate in comparison to the 85D and Sigma which are both faster than they are accurate, apparently. Still, I'll see what I get out of it. If it's unusable during my shoots or I lose too many then I'll return it or sell it when I can afford to move to an 85G or when Sigma update their 85.
