i have a similar shot like that from Victoria Peak in Hong Kong. You can see inside people's kitchen and the TVs in their living rooms...

I'm very close to ordering one of these, the only thing putting me off at the moment is some reviews say the AF is slow.. is it really slow or reviews just finding something negative?

No problems here compared to my other L or HSM lenses. What cameras were those reviews testing on? Reviewer comments on stuff like this doesn't always reflect actual real world performance either.

Also I bet they don't state if they had the dock and updated the firmware which did improve AF performance with some bodies.

:p A good starting point would be VSCO, they cover a wide range of films in each pack and you can freely tweak each one to your own liking and save the changes into your own presets or simply use them to observe what development sliders they adjust to get the effects they do.

VSCO is not free though but plenty of free ones are about such as:
http://freepresets.com/sample-page/2-free-vintage-presets-for-lightroom-4/

As I say, they will get you started, the rest is down to how far your understanding of the development module goes in Lightroom I guess!

meh. robbie more then matched your sampled pic :)

Lol, like I said a while ago, it would be an epic fail if Sigma didn't make a lens equal to something that came out back in the 90's !

To be honest, it's not about what is better, I've had the 35L for about 3 and a half years. I would have missed soooooo many shots had i waited, and between getting the Sigma or the Canon with a library of photos, it's the latter everytime. May be I should've started a thread on the 35L way back then, or the 24/1.4 now ;)

I think it is good that Canon and Nikon got competition, it makes things interesting. I don't dislike Sigma, in fact i am dying to try the new 50. You have no idea how much I want the 50/1.2 just for the red ring to make it a complete set!

Which reminds me:

http://sigma-rumors.com/2014/04/sample-image-from-the-sigma-50mm-f1-4-dg-hsm-art/

It's rather good, it would seem.

I actually took my camera and 35 art to work today (and my 85L as it's my baby :D). Finished work, walked down the road, jarred my back and had to get a taxi home. I was displeased.

I want the ultimate collection of 3 lenses and am hoping one day it happens :p

14mm 1.4 Art (Sigma better be listening!).
35mm 1.4 Art.
85mm 1.4 Art.

1 down, 2 to go :D

Anyone using this on a crop camera? If so, how are you finding it?

JanesyB is on a 70D and I believe a couple others are too. I will page JanesyB!

I think you would be dreaming !

The holy trinity is the 35/85 and 135 with the 50mm being the other lens that is wildly popular.

The 85 came out not long ago, the 35 is out now, the 50 is out VERY soon. I would say it's the 135mm next, then a 24mm and then do the 85mm. Then perhaps then 14mm (but what about the 200mm prime too? or 100mm) but people who buy 14mm don't shoot action, they generally shoot static so a lot of them go for the Canon 17mm TSE and use the shift feature and stitch.

TSE is a no go for the stuff I shoot at the UWA end for, the look is real nice but it's additional faff. 17mm is wide but the additional 3mm will definitely help with giving additional perspective to landscapes & derelict places and so on. Hence the reason for interest in the 14mm 2.8 L - It's pricey but I know if I did get it then it would get used quite a lot and I could most probably sell it years later once Sigma do release something without a huge loss.. I've decided against the Samyang, AF is desirable.

135mm isn't a range that interests me really, if I photographed trackside events more than maybe once a year then I'd just go for a 70-200 really but I've had that range and got rid in the past :(

Think the focal range I have (and want to have) is in-line with the way I like to shoot things, to be close to the action and be a part of it as it in turn lets viewers feel like they're there in the picture too rather than just viewing a picture from far away.

I know 135 isn't what interest you but I am just thinking of what the market demands and what is popular, which drives production and R&D. They won't make something first if it sells less if that makes sense.

If I were you, get the Canon 14L, use it and be happy with it. It's not about the Sigma being better or worse, it is about Canon vs Absolutely nothing else.

So it is like having a lens and taking pictures that benefit you and potentially generate a better portfolio and income vs you don't.

p.s. I know the 17mm is not as wide as 14mm, hence the shift. It is like the camera is on a rail and you side step left and the right, except it is stationary on a tripod. With no turning of the camera axis so you don't get the distortion. You can also do this up and down.

Oh I understand that fully :D

It just would have been nice to have a set of lenses that were all Sigma and came from the same new model lineup, how amazing would that look lined up - "Oh are those 3 lenses Zeiss? Oh!" - You know :p

I know the feeling...me looks at 7 lenses with a red ring....and thinking getting NOT the Canon 50L....

I know the feeling, trust me ! :p

But i am past the gear thing, clients really don't care what it is as long as the pictures are good. Use the lens that get you the results you desire, that's all it really comes down to. So in your case, the 14L ticks all the boxes, whether the name on the barrel is Canon or Sigma really is irrelevant.

Cheers!

Keen to know this as well. Every image i've seen has been taken on a FX camera. It's usually pretty easy to spot DX image in comparison.

I found a review on youtube that focused on both FF and crop but didn't really say how it felt using. Optically it looked great on a crop sensor, minus the crop.
