Sigma 35mm f1.4....?!!

it not meant to be a portrait lens. get the sigma 85 1.4 instead for portraits

Or just take the pictures you want with the lens that gives the results you like 35mm isn't the traditional head shot length but it doesn't mean you shouldn't hell you take take portraits with a 14mm if you want to get really wacky!

I don't find the distortion to be an issue, there's very little distortion but not everyone's face suits being shot up close with any lens really. The above of the bride wasn't to photograph her face, more the makeup and the bling :p

Either way, it's not something I've noticed when comparing similar shots between 36 and 85 (distortion).

I've shot some headshots with fisheye before on production work, got funky results but they were a funky bride and groom as well so suited them :D

Ok the results are in.
At 1.2m my Sigma35 was back focusing 3 inches. Granted this is hardly an extremely accurate way of measuring but I've now corrected this in camera & took a few very sharp pics wide open.
This back focusing rings true from my first use of the lens where I noticed the AF was not spot on & the shots I took in a museum recently must have been in focus because the DOF at 2-3 meters away was sufficient.

Incidentally an old Tokina 70-210 was back focusing 2 inches at 210mm but spot on at 70mm so ive adjusted it in camera to just shy of whats needed for 210mm & take the hit as the DOF at 70mm will be more anyway.

An old Nikon 50mm 1.8 was virtually spot on.

I am seriously tempted by this lens. If everything in the dpreview is to be believed, Sigma have aced all the the big camera manufacturers. Quite an achievement!

Considering the price it sells for and by all accounts the other new Sigma A, S and C ranges they're a cut above the competition for value for money and performance. Sharp, silent AF, great build quality and design and the ability to customise and update with the dock. What more could anyone want?

People mention waiting for the 35mm L replacement due to be announced any time now but let's face it, it's not going to be below 4 figures in asking price and can't see it being 2x better optically either.

Plus Sigma QC seems to be great too.not heard much people saying they got bad copies of the sigma A series lenses.

They have stepped up big time.

Before, Canon had the IQ, build quaity and QC ahead of sigma but now sigma able to match those areas for half the price.

i dont mind buying canon gear over sigma but not if the only difference between the two respectable lenses is the label.

At f16 the Nikon kit zoom gives much poorer quality than the Sigma35, but hey it is a zoom.
I think the vegetating around the BMW is helping to compose the shot as well :)
I found the sweet Bokeh aperture to be f2.8 but yeah I agree shooting wide open can dramatically alter the composition.

There is really little need to shoot at f/16 IMO excepth for two specific circumstance.

Shooting long exposures and you don't have a filter - go and buy a filter, you'll get much better quality images.
Shooting extreme foreground and wanting the background completely in focus - on a 35mm lens that'll be close to closest focus point of your lens!

For the vast majority of landscapes on a 35mm f/8-f/11 will be more than fine. You'll have the benefit of much better IQ as well due to reduction in defraction and won't pick up as many marks on your sensor.

Is E-Infinity still the best place to get it from?

No idea, never heard of them. Infact the last time I heard that name it was a company that did Counterstrike server rental :D

My 35 just arrived. I've only taken a few snaps with it but it's spot on and doesn't need calibrating, so that's nice *looks at USB dock I don't need*

:D

crashing the party....I'd like to try the Sigma but...I don't need to in a way.

i know you guys like sharpness, not bad for a lens that pre dates DSLR :)
