Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

Just a headsup folks. Rave have a discount code on their roasted beans (15%) this weekend.

CODE: BIGRAVE15

Cheers I made the most of it and ordered some of the new dark chocolate blend and some Italian job, I have tried all their other blends and enjoyed them all but the dark chocolate one sounds just how I like a latte and if the Italian job is good its a lot of fresh coffee for a very good price.

I also chucked in a pre-ground bag of the *very limited* Finca Dolores to try with my aero press at work.

next coffee ?

Just got through these 3 as recommended on here, so what 3 next ?

Brazil Fazenda Inglaterra Pulped Natural Bourbon

Costa Rica Finca de Licho Yellow Honey Vila Sarchi

El Salvador Finca Santa Petrona Washed Red Bourbon

All really good too :)

Cheers
Dave

Go read the cupping notes and reviews on the various suppliers. See what tickles your fancy. Take note of what you liked from those three and use that as a kind of checklist for other coffees.

I recommend trying some of the African stuff. Yirgacheffe region in Ethiopia has produced some of my fav beans via HasBean.

This one is a winner: http://www.hasbean.co.uk/collection...cts/ethiopia-yirgacheffe-kebel-aricha-natural

So my AeroPress arrived today, any tips?
Tried a cuppa with my usual espresso grind that I use for the Gaggia... it's alright! No crema but that's expected. Tastes good though, used enough water for number 3 on the plunger. about half a mug of coffee topped with foamed milk.

This is how I do it:

Wet filter, screw cap on etc.
1 scoop (I grind more coarse than espresso, but less than drip).
Add enough water to wet all the grounds and leave for ~30-45secs
Add water to level 3
Put plunger in but don't actually press down much, sealing the hole will stop water from filtering out and let it brew.
Leave for ~3-5 mins, then plunge slowly. (At this point you can leave it for longer if you want)

If you find it a bit strong, add less water an then top up at the end with hot water as you would an americano.

There is a thread kicking about, but look up the inverted method. It's the way I've pretty much always used it.

That video is pretty much exactly how I do it, few places say to leave it so long etc. Most of the time I can't be bothered. and always tastes great anyway.

At the end of that video it says "get the puck out and save it" What use does it have?

I've recently brought a Aeropress and I have to say that i'm impressed, just eyeing up coffee grinders now :)

It's kept the foxes out of our garden. We've been dumping it into the holes they were digging and we haven't had them back since.

Does mean we have holes filled with rotten coffee in our garden, mind.

Were you spreading it as is or letting it decompose in a compost bin first? Probably way too acidic to dump straight onto your petunias tbh.

I brought a coffee grinder yesterday, the De'Longhi KG79 Professional Burr Grinder that seems highly rated. Brought a pack of fairtrade coffee beans at the co-op on the way home as it was an amazon locker pickup within a co-op.

Ground them expecting the smell to be amazing but it was not, the ground coffee just smelt burnt? I then made a coffee with it using the aeropress inverted method and it wasn't much good at all.
Bad batch of coffee? Does the grinder need to run in or something... I'm pretty disappointed right now, I thought even average beans would be give me a better cup freshly ground but have I just been unlucky!

It's the beans - not much better, arguably not at all better, than a jar of Douwe Egberts Instant.
I stay well clear of any supermarket beans, they've probably been sat on the shelf for weeks and boxed beforehand for weeks. I've never had a good bag from a supermarket (admittedly not having tried a whole lot)

Get yourself some proper, freshly roasted coffee. I can taste the difference from a week or twos old beans. Stuff in the supermarket was probably roasted months ago, possibly even longer.

The difference is so huge, you'll struggle to go back.

Oh no! my paranello has sheered off on my gaggia classic (thankfully after I had just made a latte : phew : )

So after looking at some YouTube vid's I have stumped up the money to get myself the Ranciliop Silva (V1/V2) steam wand. Seems simple enough to fit, then it's time to try and get some good microfoam out of it. Does anyone have any tips (I suspect this may take a couple of attempts to get something half decent)

Wow that was easy. Have fitted my new wand and attempted my first latte. It did not go well. Think this is going to take some time to get the technique right. I had a bit of foam but not much. So ended up just having a hot cup of milky coffee.
