Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

So apart from a porlex grinder any other accessories worth owning ?

And does everyone grind all of the beans they buy and store it? Or grind when needed etc?

Scales, jewelers 0.1g ones off ebay for about £5. Weigh your beans out - aim for 55-60g/l for filter brews. The aeropress (inverted) will hold ~240-250g of water, so about 13-15g beans per brew.

Take the variables away and you get closer to making a perfect brew every time ;)

well today has been a very exciting day with coffee as got my usual has bean subscription coffee (which this week sounds right in my wheelhouse for flavours)

But also took delivery of a couple of boxes (yes you read that right boxes) of http://www.hasbean.co.uk/products/has-bean-exclusive-guachipelin-natural

It comes in a nice little presentation box and information card. (will try to get some pics up later)

This again is something that intrigued me and is right in my flavour profile. So I think this will first be made into a chemex as this is my de facto comparison method (I just find the chemex seems the easiest brewing method to get a consistent and repeatable brewing method for bringing out all the flavours in a filter coffee).

Note to self: must try and use the aeropress/V60 a bit more ;p

As for my recent gaggia upgrade with the steam wand I think I am now finally getting the hang of it. Still need to practice a bit more with it to get the same/similar milk results every time but it isn't turning into foam with a bit of milk now it is looking more like gloss paint ;p

I guess next thing for me to look at would be a machine upgrade I've had the gaggia now for what 4/5 years.

What would be considered the next logical upgrade step to the gaggia?

Depends on your budget Dave - I went the lever route and upgraded the grinder more than the machine. The grinder should cost as much if not more IMO.

You could look at dual boiler e.g. expobar stuff.

Well I already have a rancilio rocky grinder so that should be fine for a bit yet.

Budget wise would probably be within that 500 - 1000 bracket. As much as I love the look of the Rocket Espresso machines I fear they are just outside of my price bracket.

That sounds lovely , bit pricey though! How is it?

So I've been using a friends Morphy Richards machine for a little bit, basic coffee knowledge here, so wondered why this was happening:

First coffee comes out fine and the grounds are a bit dark brown and quite wet, second coffee comes out fine and the grounds are a lighter brown and quiet dry/crumbly.

What is best? What should I realy be looking for, I don't recall from using a proper amchine waaay back the grounds coming out wet? I probably filled/tamped them the same, and same coffee used each time,

Well have had a couple of chemex's out of it and you certainly get a raisin taste from it and there is a slight boozy quality. The flavours tend to shine when the coffee has cooled a little from initial brewing. This would actually make a really good cold brew.

I still need to try this as an espresso (not usually a straight espresso drinker) and as a latte.

It is on the pricey side but well worth it imo.
