Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

Just opened a bag from Origin and one from The Barn in Berlin. Both picked up when in London on Thursday.
Both excellent, but can't remember what they are off the top of my head.
Also had a double shot of Caravan Market Blend from Hermitage Rd this afternoon. Tasty.

Lowering the budget, following Raymonds advice tried these, ~£2.50 M&S, 227g
excellent value, better than waitrose Sumatra Mandheling, and Momentum, for espresso anyway,
as good as Rave's cheaper Italian blend

Ooo I'll give those a try. Once I've finished my current stash of Waitrose Kenyan Monsooned Malabar anyway; bought 4 packs today to replace the Sumatra Mandheling I've been drinking for a while now.

They're both quite oily so apparently over-roasted? Taste good to me though and for a very reasonable price relative to these exclusive online places.

Got to tighten my pockets now days! Saving 1/3rd is nothing to snip at really and for the money, it is surprisingly good, actually as nice as some of the single origins i've had.

The M&S black bag ones, I think the ones they use in their cafe is a bit bland but I think the Columbian one is great value.

Sette 270W delivered earlier. May need some more beans by morning . Ummed and ahhed about which grinder for ages before plumping for this, especially with some reports of questionable reliability. In the end this is the one that ticked all the boxes for me and was affordable!

The Columbian one was £3.60, I plummed for the Italian that was only £2.60 - M&S have not yet earned my trust (other than good quality white shirts they used? to sell)

I was thinking you had a mazzer mini and a Rocket, must be wrong,
but they must have sorted the Sette270W glitches out now (weight was not resetting was it, had watched a few utubes)

I swear it was 10p difference ! lol Wish I kept the receipt now as I bought them all to try. The black bag M&S one is definitely the worse but still perfectly palatable and I am not even putting any sugar into my coffee these days.

I wish!

No I have a Silvia and was using it with a cheap-ish Graef grinder which just doesn't cut it for me anymore. Did look at something like a mazzer but don't have the counter space for anything big. Even the Sette is pushing it due to stupidly low wall cabinets in th kitchen.

My new V60 for the office arrives today. Will be using it alongside my old Sage grinder. Does anyone have any particular tips/experiences? I'll read up on appropriate technique and the like of course but until now I've really only made espresso (with the very odd foray into aeropress when borrowing a friend's).

Wash the filter & warm the cup with hot water :)
Use scales to work out how much water to put in otherwise its hard to work out how much water you've put into the v60 vs how much your cup will take.
Pour a little into the coffee grounds to start and let it bloom then pour slowly to top up about 3/4 of the way up the filter paper, let it settle then top up.
Don't try and lift the filter while its hot or has water in, can rip and dump grounds everywhere!

Good stuff, thanks :)

I don't know how true this is but my impression of aeropress is that it is suited to floral/fruity coffee varieties, whereas I find those flavours often get a little muted when made as espresso. Is the same true for v60?

I've followed this guide & it does what it says on the tin.

bargain : buy one get second half-price across the range.

I would speculate valves and nitrogen(?) charge on packets is of better commerical quality than from any of the independents (Rave, Hbean etc)

Picked up some of that M&S italian blend to play around with the new grinder, and it's not too bad. Better than the last lot of beans I bought from a supermarket (Modern Standard). Plus ~£4 for 2 bags is a bargain.

One thing a bit strange about these beans - the 2 packets I used so far both have a tbs, or so, of broken beans/shards at the end of the packet -
can't see how an automated fill line would do that, must be filled from two sources.

... I need to get an M&S loyalty card though and weekly delivery. ... and try out some other varieties Columbian ?
