Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

Acme espresso mugs arrived, damn they are so much nicer than the last ones (which were nice). They look the same, but the feel is completely different

I now feel weird that I'm appreciating a mug

the churchill .... um do I need some blue ones too

For those of you that live in hard water areas. How do you cope?

I've got the Delonghi EC685 and it's telling me it needs descaling every 2 weeks which feels ridiculous.

Cheers, we actually have a boiling water tap, but sadly only the boiling water side is filtered. Not sure how it'd work to put one of those on the cold water feed too as it might not supply the required pressure. We do have a water dispenser on the fridge but it comes out so slowly i never use it!

Maybe i should invest in a brita jug thing and use that exclusively for filling the coffee machine.

Ah, great shout.

5l might be a bit heavy for the wife. I've ordered pack of 2l bottles. Does feel a bit wasteful from a environmental point of view, but on the other hand i'm not using chemicals in descaling every 2 weeks :p

Maybe you could upgrade to a plumbed in Rocket and use an inline filter with that :p

Just decant it to something smaller :p

how high is the calcium carbonate ours is high ~300mg, from earlier posts, but descale only every 3months, used twice a day + about 1litre water/day going through.
... maybe the machine is lieing ?

Use bottled water, the huge 5 litre jugs aren't expensive.
whats' a good priced/brand ... volvic prices are $$$, and thought waitrose own, was acknowledged as being soft enough and preserving 'tasty' minerals.

that's not removing scale/softening though ... discussed before ?

No idea about ratings. Might order a test kit. If we don't de-scale often then it seems to clog up and not work properly though.

It's the waitrose/ocado own one that i've added to the shopping. Think £1.49 for 8l

Whatever is cheapest in either tesco or asda it's better than tap water and probably not losing much when you have to clean less.

Sorry maybe we did I don't remember. You can still get similar inline systems that are designed to reduce scale that might be a viable solution?

What brand? Quooker do some sort of scale reduction system, albeit pricey...

yes waitrose, as opposed to tesco seems the one to go for, both £1.5/8L

I usuallly warm cups (HX machine, not rotary pump), running water through the pf with basket, water comes out in bursts, as opposed to continuously , so on for 2s, off for 2s, not sure if this is normal, or, to what degree , it always did this ... or, if it is some indication of, say, pump wear ?

Got my gaggia on a timer. Somehow managed to leave the 'pour' button on, and came down stairs to a burning smell :(

Seems goosed. Still need to get round to stripping it apart.

oh man - upgradeitus is taking its hold - planning a new kitchen for next year and what better way to compliment it than with a new machine (plus my gaggia is getting rather long in the tooth, despite still being in perfect working order.

Now the first question is to lever or not to lever, wondering if i can justify an elektra Microcasa...
