Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

The MrShades one, I didn't find installation particularly difficult but have done a few projects like these. The instructions are very comprehensive though so provided you follow them carefully it's hard to go too far wrong. Just take pictures and label things clearly before dissembling anything.

That looks like a rather large unit, I can't remember the last time i used a sodering iron (or where i put it!)...you do need to solder right?

What does it actually do?

Very cool.

Though I am very tempted by a bottomless porter. Has anyone used one?

I have one but you need fresh beans and good grounds, it is great to learn if your pour is good as it exposes it. If its bad in any of it, from beans, to tamper, you will get squirts/jets of water everywhere over your kitchen counter.

Its electronics to control the temperature in a more intelligent way than a bimetallic strip - thus giving a more stable temperature. May also include a shot timer and pre-soaker.

Are you aware of one for the Gaggia Classic that include the shot timer and pre-soaker? I was looking at the MrShades one but that's a bit steep at nearly £100 for just a few bits of wire and 2 electronic bits... As in I'm not sure if it's a £100 worth gain?

Hard to say but for me the £100 for having all the bits in one box plus all the pre-terminated wires and instructions were well worth it.

The MrShades one .. does it have a timer or pre-soak ?
I see Mecoffee pid, discussed before, seems to have gone to the wall that was a good one pre-soak, plus bluetooth app and timer ...no one appears to have bought it up ?

I tend to agree I had specced out the pid+ssr+pt100+case ~£40
I eventually put the money into a 2nd hand HX machine instead

The motor in my Sette 270W packed in recently, it was a refurb unit and I've had it 2 years. Contacted Coffeehit who were able to replace the motor and also did the upgrade to the 270Wi model at the same time. Really great service, they turned it around in a day and I have my caffeine fix again.

That's a really good service, glad to hear it. I ordered all of my cups from them and they have always been good to order from.

Clearing out the basement and I've thrown out an old espresso machine because it was manky and had bugs in. But I've kept two portafilters in case they're useful to someone. I know it can be tricky finding replacements and spares!

One's from the machine - I think it was called La Pavoni? (Edit: yep, La Pavoni EPL) Very much in the style of an older Gaggia Cubika.

The second is unused and I think was left over when someone had a Dualit they took with them - but I'm not 100%.

Bought myself a decent Sage one touch manual and found that we have a coffee bean shop in Dundee that's been open since 1868. Got myself some lovely beans really enjoying changing the grind and temperature etc and it making a difference to the flavours. Going to save a fortune on my daily costa run :D

interesting.

It looks super difficult...but it seems quite common mod so it can't be THAT hard, it can't be harder than putting together a PC.

It's definitely a mod worth doing in my opinion. My shots are so much more consistent since fitting it. The instructions are really good so it's fairly straightforward to fit, it's just unplugging wires from one place and plugging them in at another.
