Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

Yer - bit of a shame that, hope is the run it separately but don't honestly believe they won't start money saving :(

Not sure I see what the point is, for either party. I suppose Lelit could start shifting more if they get into Breville's retail distribution channels.

As long as I can still get parts for my Mara I don't really care though, it'll probably outlive me :D

Sage win production facilities in europe, expansion into commercial market ... and the Lelit name, probably with idea to expand Lelit brand into thermocoil technology.

Think my Sage Barista Express might be done for. Turns on, heats up and the grinder works but it will no longer pump water through the machine. Just get a loud click and nothing.

Had a couple of appliances pop in Storm Arwen in December when a power cable got damaged. The power grid engineer who came out warned us that other appliances might go over the next 12 months as some damage isn't immediately noticeable.

Sounds like it's time to treat yourself to an upgrade ;)

I'd rather not drop half a grand on a coffee machine atm. It's 3 years old and I expected a bit more out of it! If it can't be fixed or isn't covered by the extended guarantee that Northern Powergrid offered I'll probably stick with an Aeropress until I feel the need for a machine again!

I've just had a cup from the inverted Aeropress method and I forgot how good it can taste, just a bit more of a faf on!

sounds like calcification - what water ? ulka pumps are not so expensive mine ~£12

my HX machine (tap water) needs doing - the flow rate seems to typically drop off and a shot takes longer, pucks looser :
my theory is that the OPV valve may become less efficient with scale, although that is on the cold side of machine, so maybe its fur in the grouphead.

Yep my old machine packed up 3 years ago and really no point in a new one when £30 aero press is just as good for coffee. Not to say I don't want a new machine just can't justify the price.

Aeropress seals go after 18months go :)

I'm about to pull the trigger on a refurbished Sage Barista Express from indoodirect on eBay (taking full advantage of the 20% off eBay code expiring today), but completely undecided on which to go for:

Barista Express BE875 Black Sesame
12 month warranty
Included accessories - tamper, milk jug, portafilter, 4x filter baskets, water filter holder and razor
Missing accessories - water filter, steam wand pin and manual
£324.99

Barista Express BE875 Black Sesame
30 day warranty
Included accessories - tamper, portafilter, 1x filter basket and water filter holder
Missing accessories - water filter, steam wand pin, manual, razor, milk jug and 3x filter baskets
£259.99

£65 extra gets me 11 months additional warranty, 3 filter baskets worth £15, a jug worth £15 and a razor worth a few quid. It also looks like the more expensive one is refurbished where the cheaper is just sold as used? If that's the case then the more expensive one seems a no brainer surely?

Effectively £30 for 11 months warranty and a refurbished machine rather than used.

Like I said I'd consider a DTP, or, maybe newer bambino+, and with (even) a sage grinder, you have a more upgradeable solution,
I think in 30days of intensive use you'll know if there are warrantable problems, 1 double regular basket is all you really need.

ebay seems to have some transaction on BE circuit boards, so maybe older ones are having issues - I guess you don't know manufacture date for any refurb or used ones, you might buy.

descale yesterday 2 packs of cafetto restore , rather than cheaper citric acid , it gives less blue residue so must be worth it . I'll mix it myself next time

Almost all consumer machines will pack up in a few years unless you are feeding them the right kind of water or descaling them often. Even then, the descaling can cause issues. They pretty much all run on small pipes and valves which are easily blocked with limescale.

same ulka one I referred to, I had subsequently learned the pump could be opened up and potentially cleaned/repaired - it's been sitting in the kitchen, for a year, awaiting it's overdue post-mortem How to repair ULKA water pump I'd thought it was a sealed unit

Conclusion is, maybe this replacement pump was not as well made as the original one, which was marked made in Italy;
although it was 'only' £14, may contact seller I don't expect to renew a pump anually. - or ? counterfeit pump

My Sage BE arrived and it's in near immaculate condition. No scratches, dents or damage anywhere on the machine. The odd bit of dried coffee, but nothing else. It also came in the original box with all accessories apart from the water filter (the holder was included however).

I ordered some beans from Square Mile which should hopefully arrive this week. I also sorted some other bits from Amazon which arrive today - small digital scale, Sage knock box and a filter.

Any advice on dailing in the machine? I watched a couple of videos on YouTube, but it would be great to hear advice from actual users in here.

Accept that you will probably waste your first 1 or 2 shots of any new beans you use. Typically I find that for freshly roasted beans I start off at grind level 4 and go from there. Some need to be finer for me to hit a 25-30 second extraction and others seem to be happy at a 5 or 6

Lots of trial and error. I'd also buy a bag of citric acid off of Amazon and give it a descale every month when you do your cleaning cycle. I tend to use water in the machine that has already passed through a britta filter but we live in a fairly hard water area.

Change 1 variable at a time or you wouldn't know which made the difference.
