Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

My machine has sprung a leak (coming from behind the group head). Terrible timing what with covid19 and all, too.
you've found service manuals/ exploded diagrams ?

no , blind improvement with the flat marzocco filter , right;
after cleaning up the mess, in fact its broader hole pattern overlaps/are coincident with, the rim of the holder,

indeed, the basket is inside the pf holder, as opposed to flush, like mid_gen/Ray's photos.

Bottomless is cool to look at and good to see how you can improve, but I once I can do it, I use the normal double sprout everytime. It is just so much less mess.

I am used to putting an espresso glass underneath for measurements by volume. Once I get my scales though i will measure by weight instead.
I tend to measure for a while on a new batch of beans then run with it going directly in my mug onto hot water for the rest of the bag, checking how its holding up occasionally.

I used bottomless for a while, I found I'd need to change my grind when going back to a double spout to just stick with that these days. I might try bottomless again now as I don't think I had my Sette to grind with then.

what is the volume/height of the cup >100ml ... ?
but do the scales work? or you may be returning them

The cup is a double espresso size and the scales work as intended. I got it as it is nice and short, fit the depth of the machine. I can always remove the lid which is just clipped on. I guess a bottomless portafilter does fix the problem lol

Meh, over a week since I ordered from 47 degrees, and nothing arrived. Think I'll stick to Rave in future, was keen to buy local. Down to my supermarket beans :(

Whilst not exactly same town as 47 Degrees (never heard of them before, had to Google), Hasbean are kind of local and are very good. If you want to try a variety of roasters and don't mind buying further afield then I highly recommend Triple Co Roast and would suggest that Clifton Coffee is also a good shout, another good SW one is Round Hill Roastery. I know for sure that Triple Co will only take a few days to send out beans and are doing free delivery for the time being.

If anyone wants to try a variety of roasters and beans then I really would recommend FCP Coffee, they are a local speciality coffee shop that also sell retail and due to covid-19 are only doing beans for retail and have closed the shop. They change their stock on a weekly (roughly) basis so there is always something new and interesting to try, they will be a touch more expensive than direct from roasters but they have to support themselves too.

Has anyone tried the beans from Espresso Underground? I have ordered some as they are cheap at £12/kg and i'm still getting used to the cost of whole beans...

£12 a kilo is on the cheap side, it would be hard to get it cheaper on a consumer level, considering the cheapest beans in supermarket is £3 for 250g so you are right at that level. Any roasters will charge an average of £6 or so for 225g-250g to start off with.

My advice is don’t buy a kilo of beans unless you know you like that, it is a lot of coffee to go through if you don’t like it. I tend to get 205g bags because of this reason.

/\/\/\ I had some too with my order. Rave never used to do that. Theres a couple of other roasters that do this to my knowledge, one is North star Roasters in Leeds & Darkwoods coffee. Been a while since I bought either of their coffees so they may have changed.

so, got my Gaggia classic today
had a couple coffees coming through looking super watery and meh
ground some coffee as fine as my hand grinder would allow, tamped and got some chocolatyness from my coffee I've not tasted before (aeropressing)
still a bit rubbish, but I'm only 4 coffees in and need to get learning! :D

It sounds like your biggest issue is going to be getting the grind right, might be time to upgrade your grinder :)

Theres also easy mod to set the over pressure valve on the classic that makes life a load easier:) Someone on here has one that they were lending out.

do the gaggias come with pressurized , and normal filters, so, maybe check you are, initially, using the pressurized one,
AFAIK , they have fewer/smaller holes so they can tolerate an uneven/bigger grind
... Ray, has one, No, ... lock-down is promoting poor memory

Came with 3 filters,
2 that use the wee plastic 'perfect crema' and one that doesn't.

I'll no doubt need to play with a lot of settings, wasn't expecting this to arrive till the weekend, need a new grinder as I've only my hand grinder now and some aldi coffee haha
