Sim racers - what are you running?

Took a day off to build the sim. Few bits still to come but it runs! Really like the Alpha Mini

Daughter has bought forza so she's bought a new fanatic steering wheel csl wrc, fingers crossed she don't get hit with to much import duty.

There shouldn't be any import duty on it. Just the VAT and a £12-13 handling fee for the courier. Depending on your bank, you may also have to pay a small currency conversion charge. Even with all of those my Heusinkveld order came to £100 less than buying from a UK reseller.

Just be aware I had no opportunity to pay the VAT and courier fee before they turned up at my door with the parcel - this was with UPS, other couriers may be different. They did email me with the amount I owed them beforehand so I made sure I had cash. They don't give change. They will accept other payment methods but in my case he said he'd have to come back tomorrow if I wanted to do that and he wouldn't leave the parcel without payment. They also changed my delivery date midway through the day it was supposed to be delivered. Fortunately I work from home most of the time, but had I taken the day off to wait in for it, I'd have been mighty annoyed...

Any other questions about importing, just ask! I guess you don't really get a choice with Fanatec.

That's looking really good. The seat is lovely though absolutely too narrow for me...

That GTC rim looks so good.

How are you finding the Alpha Mini compared to your Simucube? I very nearly bought a Simucube but I just couldn't justify an extra £850-900.

When you buy from fanatec, you pay import charges

Huh. Do you know why that is? I made sure before I bought from Heusinkveld that there was no import duty on sim racing gear and figured that applied no matter who you bought it from.
Are you based in the UK? If so. Pretty much everything you buy that comes from and bought from a European outlet /store will get taxed.

So with fanatec you are buying from Germany.

If you found a UK store that stocked and sold fanatec wheels, then you would not have to pay import tax.

Thank you brexit

Ah, I get you.

Import duty and VAT are different things. Import duty is a variable percentage charged on certain items over a certain value. VAT is the tax you're charged on any item you buy whether that is in the UK or not. Sim racing gear does not attract import duty but you will be charged VAT on it. When buying sim gear from the EU, the vendor shouldn't charge you VAT in the country of purchase.

In Fanatec's case - Germany - where VAT is 19% if I remember correctly.

For a steering wheel at €200, you would:

Pay €200 + delivery minus 19% German VAT
Then it enters the UK and you pay VAT at the UK rate of 20% on the wheel and delivery + the courier's flat rate fee (usually about £12)

Most vendors I looked at when shopping around automatically deduct the VAT and show you the price without it. It's on you to then convert that to GBP, add 20% tax and the courier fee for dealing with HMRC on your behalf to get to the total it should cost you.

In this case the only difference post-Brexit is that you pay VAT at the UK rate instead of at the rate of the country you're purchasing from. When I bought direct from Heusinkveld, I paid 20% UK VAT instead of 23% Dutch VAT.

I bought a P1-X rig, keyboard tray, better feet, and triple monitor mount in Feb 2021....since then it has sat in my garage still boxed up. Sigh. Anyway, on Friday I took it to work and built it in our play room. It will get more use there then it will at home for the time being.

This weekend i've remortgaged my house and put this order together. FML.

Simucube 2 Pro Direct Drive System - R2
Heusinkveld Sim Pedals Sprint, 3 Pedal Set
Sim Lab Vario Vesa Adapter kit, (3 pieces)
Sim Lab Pedal Slider & Baseplate, Universal
Heusinkveld Sequential Gear Shifter
Bucket seat bracket set
Sim Lab Sim Shelf, P1 Cockpit
Sparco Grid Q Fibreglass Seat
Sparco Seat Runner Kit

I've got a 12th gen i7 Intel, 3090fe system and 3 x LG 32" 32GN600-B to go with it. Oh and a Fanatec R300 rim.

Before I order tomorrow, anyting i'm missing and or thoughts on what I could do differently.

Thanks

Looks smaller than I thought.

Doesn't seem to take too much floor space.

Why did you opt for that one instead of the gt evo one?

Yeah, it's not very big. It will look bigger with a seat mounted and the screens setup. The GT1 Evo isn't compatible with the wheelbase i'm running, the P1-X just covered evrything i'll need for now and going forward.

Not wishing to contradict but I ran a Simucube 2 Pro on a GT1 Evo. Although mine was mounted differently to the frame of the P1 you have there.

Re the seat - not sure it helps but Corbeau have an outlet store of sorts on Ebay. I got mine for £350 delivered which about half price for a Kevlar XL size seat.

PC may be a little overpowered unless you're running VR. My last sim PC was no slouch and ACC in VR crippled it :D

I would also honestly consider whether you really need the Simucube over something cheaper like Simagic or Moza (?) having used a Pro and now an Alpha Mini there is no difference in my lap times on ACC - I struggle to get under 2.20 at spa with the Aston on safe settings.

The HE pedals are awesome.

Thanks Ed. Good to have info from somebody who knows. The seat i've bought is similar money. It's all done now so I can forget about it.
PC already exists rather than something I'm buying. I like the Simucube stuff, it seems well supported and established. Probably more money but YOLO etc.

Progress here when it all arrives :)

I've read that people who opts for the p1x over the gt evo is basically because they are planning or will mount motion devices at the bottom of it.

The gt evo is so good it doesn't flex on very high nm wheel bases
