Singapore Grand Prix 2014, Singapore - Race 14/19

Pit radio channel is going to be a bit dull. Just when it's been working reliably on the F1 app now. :(

The FIA have compromised now.

Radio calls regarding adjustments to the steering wheel are now allowed till the end of the year, so engine maps, charge, brake wear etc...

Driver 'coaching' not allowed, so you can't say brake slightly earlier to save fuel, try a different line in T8, adjust brake balance for T1, rear tyres overheating etc...

Formula One drivers will still receive information about how to adjust their car’s settings following a late change to the restrictions on radio messages.

Although some restrictions on the messages drivers may receive will remain in place for this weekend, the extent of the ban has been significantly curtailed following the latest clarification from the FIA.

The FIA has postponed a ban on messages relating to the adjustment of power unit settings, the car’s state of charge, clutch maps, brake-by-wire settings, differential settings, start modes, fuel saving and other technical parameters will remain legal. Such messages were frequently used by teams in previous races.

However the FIA intends to enforce a restriction on driving advice being given over the radio, and has gone into greater detail about which of these messages will be outlawed as of today’s first practice session in Singapore.

The forbidden messages include those relating to:

Driving lines on the circuit
Contact with kerbs
Car set up parameters for specific corners
Comparative or absolute sector time detail of another driver
Speeds in corners compared to another driver
Gear selection compared with another driver
Gear selection in general
Braking points
Rate of braking compared to another driver
Rate of braking or application of brakes in general
Car stability under braking
Throttle application compared to another driver
Throttle application in general
Use of DRS compared with another driver
Use of any overtake button
Driving technique in general

The FIA now intends to introduce a ban on messages relating relating to car performance from next season.

have the FIA just been sensible?

I see that communication about the use of the overtake button is still not allowed via radio. Presumably if a situation like Vettel's happens again where using the overtake button puts the car in a limp mode they can talk about that

They could do a roadrunner 'beep beep' for engine start settings. Or play a riff from 'Can't Touch This' for hammer time. Sizzling bacon for an overheating engine. A donkey sound if the pace is too slow. The possibilities are endless :D

Just reading through the thread and this is brilliant ! needed more attention, well done. :D

This is one of my fav tracks. I used to try and drive it on the F1 games but I was rubbish at it. When I got a good lap in it felt great. Looking forward to this weekend, as I do every race weekend.

How about this...
What about a small readout displaying split times from the official F1 feed via 3g/4g?
It would not be data transmitted from the team, it would be coming from the FIA, via the internet.
I believe the word team is a weakness in the rule...

This actually seems quite sensible. The team have all weekend (in the garage) to discuss things like braking points, lap comparisons, etc. so there's no reason why the driver should need to be told about this during qualifying or the race. Hopefully this will allow the better/intelligent drivers to outshine others a bit more often.

Messages not permitted

Sector time detail of a competitor and where a competitor is faster or slower.

Messages permitted

Lap or sector time detail.

Lap time detail of a competitor.

Isn't that a little contradictory or at least ambiguous?

Seems pretty clear to me.

You can tell a driver the lap time of a competitor, but not how their sector times compare to his.

To ***** right. It's absolutely nonsense. It isn't doing the work for the driver, pretty much every other sport have coaches shouting instructions. Go Franz Todt

;)

It's saying you can't give a comparison with a competitor in a message, but you can give one message saying the driver's time and a separate message with a competitor's time. Seems pretty unclear to me.
