In 2008 Singapore had the honour of hosting the first night-time event in Formula One history. The inaugural Singapore Grand Prix proved a huge hit, staged on a new street circuit, with the city's famous skyline providing a truly spectacular backdrop.

The race was announced in May 2007 following the agreement of a five-year deal between Formula One Management CEO Bernie Ecclestone, Singapore entrepreneur Mr Ong Beng Seng, and the Singapore Tourism Board.It instantly established itself as one of the most dramatic and atmospheric races on the calendar. The timing of the event also means it can be broadcast at a convenient time for European television audiences as well as thrilling local fans.

Using public roads around the Marina Bay area, the circuit utilises powerful lighting systems to replicate daylight conditions and the most stringent safety protocols ensure driver and spectator safety.

Grandstand seating and hospitality areas lining the track can accommodate more than 80,000 spectators, while a permanent pit area with deluxe paddock facilities is located adjacent to the Singapore Flyer complex.

The event is more than just a motor race. "We envision it to be a national festival, and one that presents many opportunities for participation for everyone, both visitors and Singaporeans alike," said Singapore's Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr S Iswaran.

I actually feel a bit sorry for Palmer this weekend. Every reporter is going to be asking the same question over and over again. Granted, he hasn't performed well and Hulk has schooled him but he can't seem to catch a break!
 
Never been a huge fan of Singapore track :( Interesting to see if Mercedes have as much trouble as they did here last year(or was it the year before?)

As per, hoping for Hamilton win :)
 
I really enjoy Singapore - I'm biased because I've been and still really enjoy it, unlike Monaco. Certainly one of the better city circuits, and it would be great to see some rain for once in the race to mix things up a little
 
Hasn't the Singapore forecast said rain for the race the last 5 years and we've never had race rain?
 
I hope Red Bull can pull something out of the bag here to make it a nice three way fight up front. I suspect Ferrari might be a bit stronger here compared to Mercedes than at Spa or Monza.
 
I'd expect so, with how red flag happy they are with rain in daylight. To be fair I'd imagine the combination of rain/spray and night/streetlights that driving a modern F1 car in anything other than clear air would be nigh on impossible.

Would be nice to have some rain before the race so we got a damp start or similar though.

What is so different in modern F1 that prevents from normal wet sessions?
Do you remember when Michael Schumacher was still active, how many wet races happened and how no one whined about the spray...
