** Single, Dual & Triple Card 7970 - BATTLEFIELD 3 - HIGH RESOLUTION BENCHMARKS **

Thanks for your work man - much appreciated.

Soo... it appears to me that SLi 3GB GTX 580's are pretty much on a par (2fps faster) than 7970's Crossfired in BF3 at the res's I play at.

There are some discrepancies with mins although some of the max's are higher with the green camp, however I'd go out on a limb and say for this title anyway, we're pretty much about evens. I only play BF3, so for me it quite simply seems like I'll be waiting for Kepler, unless AMD pursue some pretty aggressive pricing (which it appears they've already ruled out), or revisit their drivers/game profiles for BF3 which gives these cards the "20-30% increase" they seemingly have over Nvidia in other games.

Even still, 20-30% still seems weak for these cards at this price. 50% over the 580 is something people would snap at I feel, however at the relative cost the fabled AMD "bang for buck" isn't there - at least for this game.

The minimums were much less with SLi 3GB GTX 580's in the graph but still it would not be worth switching.
Also it aint like everyone has 3GB GTX 580's or would want them.

I agree with you mate. ;)

I spent loads of hours over years with BF2 which was a great game at the time. I don't think I will be doing the same with BF3 (which is a shame).

BF3 is not quite as good as it could be (in some ways I prefer BFBC2), I just hope that EA's next one will be better.

BFBC3 perhaps? :D
Agree with this, ive ran the game on the lowest preset, even then its a jerky, stuttery mess. Pre dlc it was fine, but its taken a step back since the btk release.

Wow, that's quite impressive for the GTX 580. Perhaps best bet for me is to get another 580. But I think I'd rather wait till Kepler, sell it and get something like GTX 770 SLI.

At 1080P averaging 35fps with everything maxed out :( Playing MP you dont want to hit below 60fps so looks like I'll be seeing what nVidia have to offer.

However, I would like to see the same test run again but with HBAO disabled just to see the impact that has on performance.

Judging by those latest benchmarks there could be a price war on the horizon if crossfire 7970's are worse than SLI 580's on Battlefield 3 etc. The price of 580's already seems to be dropping. *Fingers Crossed*

Sitting here thinking my 5970 @ stock is pretty impressive. Neither 7970 or 580 comparision makes me think spending all this money is worth it for 4xAA (i have to play with 0xx) on 1080p.

I can't ever see me multi monitor gaming...or going more than 1080 or 1200 res. Maybe I'll just wait for 8xxx. This all seems rather underwealming...a bit like New Years Eve.

just done this using same settings as first post using my ocd saphire 5850 and i get the following -
Frames Time (ms) Min Max Avg
1732 60000 10 39 28.867

now i know thats unplayable but for the age of the card, the price to upgrade to a 580 or 7970 is it worth it? still considering another 5850 in cf with a new mobo or 2 nvidia 560 ti in sli

From watching Rich play the game game on both the GTX 580's and 7970's the game seems more dependent on the minimum FPS.

As a single 7970 seemed to me very playable, even Rich commentated in his surprise at how smooth it felt. Crossfire 7970 was simply fluid at all times with no issues on play-ability. :)

Yet the results show both cards to be pretty much neck and neck, a single GTX 580 was getting choppy in areas, I know I noticed it and so did Acemodder. A pair of GTX 580's seemed just like a pair of ATI 7970's, gameplay was fluid, though the ATI seems to have a much better minimum FPS in crossfire compared to SLI. What I did like was a single 7970 remained silent even whilst gaming. :)

In short from our testing if your looking to buy a new high-end card now then your not going to go wrong with either a 3GB 580 or 7970 they both have great power.

If it was my £400-£450ish I'd be buying a 7970, am sure Rich would be buying a GTX 580.
Wait to see more reviews of 3GB 580 vs 3GB 7970 from other places to really help with your decision and then come and buy from OcUK because we obviously stock both. :D

Or wait until April/May for NVIDIA's new flagship card. ;)

well what a fair test that was
stock clocks for the 7970 are 925 MHz core and 1375 MHz yet you use it at 1100mhz core and 1450 mhz on the memory

the gtx 580 is 772mhz core stock and gets 850mhz on the core with no memory overclock at all

well what a fair fair benchmarking session this has been

we need either both at stock or both overclocked propperly not ohh well ill clock these a little bit but as were trying to sell the new cards we will clock these more

make me spend my money i dont want to wait till march

good point remember how nvidia had to slash their prices by half when the 4890 was sold at £169 on release
