Sins of a Solar Empire : Rebellion

Is this easy to get into?

I like CoH and Assault Squad but fancy something epic to waste an entire Saturday taking over the galaxy.

I need a good second game for when I get bored of World of Tanks...

Defo get it mr carptacular , I have had some epic battles with this . pop by havoc sometime

Saw the vid above of the long test. Plays just like normal sins to me. Don't think id get this new version as i really cant see anything worth while other than the nicer gfx and race options which lets be honest a mod could do.

I had hoped the ui would be redone when i heard about the new game because i really never liked the current one.

I wish it also had a campaign, homeworld games had one and it was FUN as hell. Sins is very like homeworld with a big more of a 4x style but essentially its build a fleet and attack gameplay which homeworld was and they had some of the best story driven space action/rts gameplay out there.

They aren't really that similar. Homeworld you had a mothership to produce units and that was about it. In Sins you have multiple planets to control, a ton of research to unlock, fleets to build, diplomacy to deal with, and so on.

A campaign in pretty much any 4x game is going to be boring, because it will boil down to the same thing. You have x planets, build up some defences, attack a nearby planet and capture it, use more resources to build up again.

In an actual RTS you can made varied levels by greatly altering the map, the ways you can attack, and so on. In a 4x, there's little strategy in the actual battle. You can only attack planets from along one line.

Look at GalCiv's campaign. You start off with some planets, and just have to build up into a big empire. And then you win the map and have to start from scratch again. I'd much rather play a skirmish where I can set everything up in a way which I'd enjoy, then work my way up to the total destrction of my enemies.

Plus the Sins games have mini-set up maps. There are random galaxies to play, but all of the non-random ones have been set up as challenges against the AI, you can play through those like you would a campaign instead?

I have played and own sins so you didnt have to say all that. I know what the gameplay is like, i know homeworld and many many people compare the two games.

Just saying, would like a story to play to in sins, i think it would be nice.

It's typical Sins, feels nice and polished with a new lick of paint.

The beta has been pretty much smooth with no major problems, although I've not played it for a while.

If you have the previous games I think you get the new one at a discount plus instant access to the current beta.

Have you tried playing online? I've tried to play with 4 different friends, we all have desync issues when playing with any combination of us. The game's fun, but online play is currently impossible.

What sort of campaign mode would it be though? I've never been a huge fan of campaigns in 4x games since most of the levels are identical to the last. Same build order, capture planets, expand your empire, build a fleet, crush opponent. In other games you have the room to create fancy single player mechanics (Starcraft 2 had levels where lava rose up and covered half the level so you had to move out the way, for example), but I don't think something like that could work in Sins. I just think that a campaign would end up being repetitive.

Had it pre-ordered since way back when, the beta has been fun. There is however a massive multiplayer desync bug currently present that the devs seem none the wiser to fixing - looks like they're just going to ship it and patch it later unless they've worked a miracle or two in the last couple of weeks.

how does this bug affect multiplayer?

The game desyncs, as in the players end up seeing different things on their computers. For instance, I've always been playing with friends, we capture a planet and move our fleet on, but on the other person's computer, there are still enemy ships around the planet and the destroy the planet because the fleet moved on. So on one person's game they have the planet, on the other they lost it. Essentially, there are two different games going on there now.

em...........that ****ing stupid

No way to verify 100% that we caught them all but the desync situation for launch should be much improved. We've tracked some really nasty desyncs and stomped them into the ground

Just caught this dev post on the rebellion forums... so heres hoping.

That's why its a bug :p

Though there should really be at least some kind of desync detection in the game. The only reason we knew about it was because we play on voice comms. "Watch out, your ice planet is under attack!"
"Huh? No it isn't?"
"Yes it is, the orange have their entire fleet there!"
"No, their fleet is defending their homeworld which I'm invading!"
"Ah."
