Sir Alex Ferguson Retires

If Carlsberg made Football Managers, they would be called Alex Ferguson. Probably the greatest Football Manager in the world.

All this talk of Mourinho is a bit premature, with a reported £20m compensation clause in his Real Madrid contract I don't expect the Utd board to sanction that kind of outlay plus whatever his contract demands would be.

is Mourinho's contract not up?

Mourinho has to go somewhere, haven't the Real players said pretty much 'either he leaves or we do' ?

No, his contract isn't up, still at least another year left on it. He'll almost certainly leave though, he's been an odds with several senior players already this year, and I don't see him there next year.

Lol..put that ganja down son...it's messing with your head.

No one else remember losing to ajax and then Bilbao? Where are Bilbao now? They made us look like geriatrics.

That's after getting dumped out of the easiest champs league group...ever..? Maybe you all missed this and losing to city so heavily it ultimately helped us to lose the league.

I know most people tend to ignore the bad and only look at the glory but some people seem to think that we only enter one competition each year not 4..

I bought a signed frame shirt last year and I noticed that instead of the usual picture of Old Trafford or a team shot it was Fergie applauding the fans.

I said at the time it would be poignant if it was his last season :(

Straight on ebay :D

Can't quite believe it. He's definitely dropped off in the last few years (the dodgy decisions have becoming more and more frequent) but he's still one of the greatest managers ever.

Excited and terrified for the next chapter now, I want Klopp personally and he can bring Lewandowski with him :p

Really, when they're interviewing people the first and only question should be "Where should Phil Jones play?" ;)

As I've mentioned earlier, Moyes has no European pedigree and barely any experience (none of the Champions League).

He's a good manager and has done very well on a small budget, but aside from that I'm not sure what they're (the press at the moment) seeing in him...

No, it doesn't end unti 2016. There is a reported c£20m clause in his contract, if he walks away from Real Madrid they recieve that fee, if they sack him, then it gets paid to Mourinho. Either way it is a big stumbling block to hiring him for any club or to Real Madrid actually sacking him.

All the respect in the world for this manager. His passion, drive and determination at his age with the trophys he already has in the bag are outstanding.

Hes a legend for sure.

Two big clubs with two big vacancy's now...

Genuinely one of the greats. I can barely fathom the Premiership without him, let alone United.

That said, whoever his successor is will be in a very difficult position. Fergie clearly believes that he has left an excellent squad, but Mourinho would want to spend, and it would take Moyes or Klopp time to bed in and build "their" team. Next season has been blown wide open, and the success or failure of the new manager in it could dictate how Utd cope with this into the future.

I think that's because as sad as Fergie leaving is, watching Phil Jones trying to play as a box-to-box midfielder is significantly more saddening... :p

I think Fergie sees something of himself in Moyes, he has a lot of respect for him for the way he goes about his job. While the Man Utd board will probably want someone more experienced (at least on the European level), I reckon SAF will have a lot of say in who his replacement will be, and that could well be Moyes.
