While I'm in no way defending their behaviour, and of course am all for following the rules of another country while there... The article does highlight a slight double standard...

Cohabitation is illegal, but Dubai, I suspect, is more than happy to take everyone ones holiday money when it comes to unmarried couples visiting?

I'm sure they'd take my money if I went on holiday there and stayed in a hotel room with my GF?

brake the laws do the time.

Although I do think the goverment should have leaflets for different countrys highlighting differences in laws. Especially ones we simply wouldn't consider to be a crime.

I do find it quite stupid that sex outside of marraige is illegal but its not as if she didnt know that.

She has also been charged with being drunk in public and assaulting a police officer. It sounds as if she was being a bit of a yobbish ****. They should throw the book at her.

harsh. It is a muslim country governed by Sharia, but with all the signs of westernisation. 6 years is ridiculous for the bloke. i hope she was worth it

Was reading this earlier, and my first reaction was no complaint, she broke the law. But then I remembered the thread about the woman who was going to be whipped for sitting in a car with a man who wasn't her husband, and a lot of us were decrying it as barbaric.

Now they are obvious differences between the two, but I would say 6 years in jail is a bit harsh for getting jiggy with it, should probably have a fine for it to be honest.

However the fact the police officer originally let her off with a caution, then when he caught them at it again then she assaulted him after she was arrested for the second offence should mean she gets a couple of years.

She probably was let off lightly. She was having sex in a public place, and she wasen't married to that man.

Yeah, she'd be stupid to not know that that would not be tolerated. Though they are more than happy to have a lot of Russian prostitutes over there. I'd bet if it was a local they would have got off with a lighter sentence.
