Skiing/Boarding 13-14

Come to terms with the unlikeyhood of being able to afford a trip this season. Pretty gutted about it but it just wasn't feasible so soon after purchasing a house.

I finally settled on a board though, looked at the Capita DOA and the Ride Buckwild in the shop and they seemed to not fit the bill. The Ride was far too stiff, the guy in the shop suggested it only a good idea if I planned on attacking big kickers. The DOA was nice but they didn't have any in my size.

I decided to get a Salomon Assassin today in the edge riders sale. The board looks pretty unique and comes across as an all mountain board with freestyle focus. A nice compromise. Plus it looks amazing and it was on offer.

intend to keep going to as many freestyle nights as I can in the meantime and will get away next season instead.

Looking at going all out and going to whistler or similar.
Anyone have any experience in north america that they would like to share or recommend?

Now setting off for the first day's spontaneous skiing of the season at Engelberg (less than 2 hours by train... gotta love it), can't ******* wait to get on the slopes, woohoo! :D

I've been to Whistler twice and can safely say its the best place I've been to. Ski area is huge and massively varied, lifts are very good and have super friendly and helpful operators, the town is filled with different bars and restaurants. The downside is that It's very expensive and I wouldn't recommend going for less than 10 nights. A lot of people in my Family have also been to Lake Tahoe and recommend it very highly, so that might be another good option for you. :)

Just come back from Alpe d'uez, can't say I was that impressed with the resort, the company we stayed with though - club med - were fantastic, all inclusive with unlimited booze (extensive bar) and an awesome 12-17 chef buffet restaurant. I took £2000 with me, I spent £60.....

tried my new skis out too, loved 'em!

I'm after a bit of advice if possible!

Going on my first trip skiing in a couple of weeks and I'm a bit unsure about footwear in resort Après Ski would these be ok? I already own these btw

Yes that's fine, unless it has snowed a lot, the resort will usually be packed down and just a little slippy.

Not sure how the Assassin rides but I have the Salomon Salvatore Sanchez 2012 (I think). I tested it a few years ago on a board test and well loved it that much I brought it.

By far one of my favourite boards I have ever had time on and the value cost vs performance is great :)

Salomon sometimes frowned upon but they do come out with some great boards

I was out in Chamonix for the start of the season weekend. Snow sucked but it was fun. Will be in 3 valleys around the 20th of this month. Cham twice in Feb and no firm plans after that yet, but something. I was meant to be in Heavenly end of next week but need to go to China :( (But not moaning really as I do OK!)

I shall be trying my hand at snowboarding this winter (I've been skiing once and loved it). The easiest for me to get to by public transport is Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver ($2.75 bus each way, and I have a year pass to go up the gondola to the top of the mountain until March 2014), it should be good enough to learn at.

Then if I actually get decent at it from going once every week or two, I'd like to explore Whistler and Cypress Mountain as well.

The main expense for me will be getting some gear and paying for lessons.

I want to swear at you out of pure jealousness! :(

Heading off to Tignes on the 1st of March for a week. First time abroad so slightly nervous but excited at the same time. What are peoples thoughts on Tignes? Always good to hear first hand opinions. From doing a bit of research I can see tat a coupe of the zones are on school holidays during these dates, hoping it won't be too busy.

Staying at Chalet Glacier, fully catered including transfers and flights from Glasgow for £640. Just need to get lift passes now. I take it lift passes are generally a set price or is there anywhere you can get them at a discounted price?

Tignes is great. I've always stayed in Val d'Isere but ridden Tignes a lot.

Are you a good skier / boarder? If so there is some great terrain there. If not, then it is good and high so you should get good conditions, either way it is all good.

Since you are only (presumably) going for a week there are unlikely to be any deals applicable to you. Your chalet staff will no doubt want to organise pass for you so that they get commission (this will not add to your cost and occasionally they will have pre-negotiated some form of discount).

Not had any contact from the staff yet, might just fire them an email I'm that case and see if they can sort something out.

Still consider myself very much a beginner, only been boarding around a year. Done a good few days up north now with more planned before going to France.

Just got back from Val d'isere last week. Nice dumb on Christmas day meant the conditions improved over the week we were there. I never went into tignes but spent a lot of our time around Val Claret and the slopes around there, has some great fun! Will stick a few photos up in the next couple of days.

Would love do a cheap weekend in march/april but cheap doesn't seem to be possible :(

Rent my apartment... it's 1.5hrs away from geneva (cheap easyjet flight), hire car up for the weekend, cheap digs, boom ;)

NOT SELLING. HONEST!

I just got back from a week. The snow was falling like MAD on Saturday when we were leaving. Gutting to miss that but it was a good week. Warm for the time of year but snow was so so. Needs a good few feet dump really in most places for a nice base but keeps going cold > warm etc. which is a nightmare for the base.
