Skiing/Boarding 13-14

I'm just back from Moraine; just a quick 4 day break before the main event in Feb (2 weeks in whistler). It was really iffy out there with almost no base layer of snow and warm weather. We got a small dump if snow on the first day but after that it was field like on the lower slopes.

I am fuming that my new SFB's have a 1 cm tip delamination from where I skied through a bit of icy crud in piste. No rocks, no impact just icey crud.

I am due to talk to the shop I bought them off tomorrow but I am really not impressed with the build quality of these skies.

If your chalet staff are half decent they will sort out the pass for you, in fact most insist on it and normally you get a 10-20 EUROS off.

For Tignes the pass price depends if you want to go up on Val d’Isère or not, basically if your there for a week you do, since its bigger and relatively easy to get to on bus or ski lifts.
Also if you are arriving later in the day when you land (dont forget it takes 3+ hours transfer) DONT get a ski pass for that day as there are 5 free beginner lifts that will be more than enough for a couple of hours.

Thanks for the heads up.

Me and the girlfriend are looking to skiing next year probably January were new to skiing and have had a couple of lessons at Xscape the indoor real snow place and continue to do so to improve and avoid lessons to explore out there. It's looking really expensive but looks like so much fun Austria is tickling my fancy but not too sure on what resorts are the best/value and good for beginners.

Catching some air in Borovets, not a whole amount of the white stuff there so it was mainly messing around in the snow park. I did mention on this thread a few pages back that i'd fractured my skull recently, but the doctor said I was medically cleared... so that was a result :p

Be a little careful with Austria, some of the resorts are a little low and it can be hit and miss with the weather.

I'm needing to buy some new gloves & get some for the gf.

Any recommendations on gloves? I saw someone buying some gloves on the forums for snowboarding recently (the make of glove started with an H) but I can't find the thread it was in.

Have some Pow gloves which are great but after a season or so of abuse, and having to fit over the wrist guards, I'll need some new ones.

Would people recommend gloves with the wrist protectors built in at all?

Anyway, help please!7

Ah Hestra is what I was looking for.

Amazingly warm for a glove. And cheap. I have a pair of Hestra Heli mitts that I haven't felt the need to use this season worth 3-4x the price (not that I paid that).

So after snowing 4m in the first two weeks of January, today was my first proper powder day in a week or so. Went for a little hike and had a couple of waist deep runs. Japan has ruined every other resort for me.

First ski-trip coming up on Sunday! Apart from a 3 hour snowboard session at X-Scape (several years ago) I've never tried winter sports. Will be a mix of cross-country and downhill in Finnish Lapland. Combined with a photo trip for the northern lights, we should have fun whatever happens. No big slopes, but as a novice, that is comforting ;)

Got a set of Peak Performance outerwear, and some Dakine gore-tex gloves with Icebreaker liners. Plenty of base & mid layers, plus a few fleeces. Can't wait :D

Sauze D'Oulx for me on Saturday. Hoping for some more snow before then!

Anyone got any easily accessible, quick and simple solutions for "modding" a helmet. the one I have is plain white and would like some design/colour on there. Be that paint, decals or otherwise. Time is of the essence.

Whatever happened to having a helmet as a piece of safety equipment rather than fashion.

Stick a Salomon/D2B/Animal sticker on it and have done.
