Sking/Snowboarding 09/10

Skied 12 days so far this season. Hoping to hit 30+ by the end of April

I'm looking for a small portable GPS to record my max speed. Something that will fit in a pocket. An alternative might be the Suunto X10 watch but I'd prefer an independent unit. Any ideas?

Must be nice having the time! I've finally sorted a week we're all free and I'm off to Montana with friends to check out some of the trails there at the end of february. Hopefully it'll be satisfyingly crowd free.

I picked up a Garmin Oregon 300 in the states recently which is a great unit, it's pocketable but not really small (standard hand held GPS really). If you want smaller the Suunto is a pretty good bet.

Or a GPS data logger would do it if you don't want the data there and then - a friend has a Holux unit which records about 100,000 positions (so set to record a new position every 15 seconds or so) and shows live position/speed, downloads the data to a laptop later. Works for him but I prefer a normal handheld unit.

So whats the snow and weather like stu, im counting down the days till friday!!!

Just had 4 pow days in a row thanks to a crazy storm system! The 5 day forecast is calling for light flurries and cloudy conditions, thats up until you arrive, after that who knows.

Regardless of the conditions the base is very good, over 3 metres, so all areas are well filled in. The mountains are nice and quiet mid-week so you should get plenty of the slopes to yourself. Total snowfall for the season is at 9.5m!

How long are you here for?

Couple of things to wet your appetite:

I'm not going away this year but I am going to be doing my Level 1 BASI so I can teach snowboarding indoors or on dry slopes, I can't wait :D

Am looking for a cheap ski jacket (£50 or less), but not sure whether the ~£90 are worth the extra?

I've found this Trepass one for £50?

http://www.outdoormania.co.uk/Item-2-3-cat-0-brand-149-Trespass_Stellios_Ski_Jacket.aspx

Or a £90 Nike one?

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/skiing/...ke-acg-all-mountain-jacket/HEROSMDA275224#top

Or £90 Trepass one?

http://www.outdoormania.co.uk/Item-2-3-cat-0-brand-900-Trespass_Duskywing_Snow_Jacket.aspx
http://www.outdoormania.co.uk/Item-2-3-cat-0-brand-898-Trespass_Spittlebug_Ski_Jacket.aspx

Or link me to a better/cheaper one for similar prices?

Edit: Just some background:
I've been skiing once before and loved it. I am going again this February and want to buy a jacket rather than hire it because i know i will go skiing again in the future but want to keep costs down (so i can persuade my rents to buy rather than hire! :p) but i can use it for normal wear aswell. I'll be hiring salopettes though because i'll have no use for them outside of skiing.

So would the £50 jacket be enough? or is it really worth spending an extra £40?

Also, I can most probably borrow goggles off a friend, but not too sure whether to buy glasses aswell? So i'll only use the goggles for when the weathers not too good. Or should i not bother spending money getting glasses and just wear goggles?

Trespass are fine. To be honest, I do not think there is that much difference paying £50 or £100 for a jacket. They will all be waterproof but that is about it. As long as you are sticking to the piste and not heading up a glacier it will be fine. I would consider buying trousers as well. they can be had for £30 in some retailers and the cost of hiring will be nearly as much.

Just did a bit of googling for you there are some bargains out there!

You can get fully kitted for much less than £100!

In regards to goggles, I would just borrow some, though would recommend buying some. Only old farts wear glasses on the slopes. Goggles all the way. I am really fussy with my goggles as rubbish ones can steam up and can have terrible lenses / field of vision. Problem is, a decent pair is well in excess of £100.00. My Oakley A-Frame Iriduims cost me £130.00 but have lasted for 7 seasons now and are still going strong. A fairly decent pair will cost around £40.00 but I reckon you can get fully kitted with jacket, pants and goggles for around £100.00.

I cannot recommend getting your own boots enough, but funds may be an issue. They are THE most important piece of equipment and will last you for years. Some peeps I know bought themselves skis and still hire boots. Absolute madness.

Anyway, enjoy your trip, I am heading out to Serre Chevalier tomorrow to hunt some off-piste powder with my boarding crew.

Thanks for the reply.
I read that it's good to get waterproofing to at least 5000mm and breathability 5000g/sq, and sub £50 they either don't show the values or they are about 2000-3000mm? And also a benefit to getting fully taped seams?

Yeah i'm still in two minds about salopettes i guess. I can hire them for about £14 i think (college deal), but i'll see what i find.

Hmm yeah i'll just borrow/buy goggles then. They seem best for all weather conditions and i don't want to be spending money when i don't need to.

Because it's through college, the price includes skis and boots hire so no need for that. But what is it about the boots that make them so important?

Thanks. We are going to Zillertal, and i think iirc we are starting the 1st/2nd day on Fugen, and then moving onto better slopes after.. i THINK maybe Wiesing.

Hope you have a good time aswell!

I only would recommend boots is that they are the things which connect you to the skis, much the same as the tyres being the most important thing on an F1 car. You have to wear them all day and if they are not quite right, can be very uncomfortable. Having good fitting boots makes a world of difference and you can carry on wearing them all night (like I have done sometimes in the past). ;)

Taped seams are all good but come at a price which is probably out of your budget. Like I said, if the weather is not too bad and you are not going up too high a cheapish jacket should suffice. :)

Have a look at the Trackstick Mini. About £200 but records everything. You just keep it in your pocket and then just upload the info to a lappy with the built in USB.

Ah alright then. I get ya :)
I may invest in a full kit when im older but too much money for now!

And will these gloves be ok?
http://www.outdoorgear4u.co.uk/cate...ves/phoenix-osprey-goretex-ski-glove-mens.php

So for the 6 days skiing, is this all the clothing i need?
ski jacket
salopettes
goggles
hat - any woolie hat will do?
2 lots of thermals
ski gloves
3 ski socks (enough?)
neck ring warmer thing/scarf
other jumpers/fleeces/tees

EDIT: Oh and when buying a ski jacket. For sizing, would you buy the size you would normally wear for jumpers or bigger? I most probs will go into a store and try but for a rough guide?

Razor-BladE - head down to TK Maxx, you will get some really nice stuff there for VERY little (the one in Brighton still has a lot of Ski clothing.)

Salopettes range from £20 up, I got a really nice pair for of Trespass for £30, very happy.

Jackets, a little more expensive, up to £50 usually (some of those Nike Jackets were in).

Goggles - they had a couple of OK ish Trespass ones for £10, although I'd splash out on a nicer pair if you can wangle it.

Alright then. Will do. But i'd have to pay to get to Brighton, there's one in Croydon i'll go to.

Which Nike ones?

And Oakley O Frame goggles?
