Sky Broadband

From the samknows website, the following services are available in my area:

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale SDSL
Bulldog LLU
Easynet LLU
Pipex LLU
NTL Cable

I am currently on the Bulldog 8mbit service and have Sky sat. I am wanting to go onto the max service from sky for £10 per month, but kinda scared of this FUP, as I do get carried away with downloading sometimes ;p

I am already worried about my internet downtime if or when I go from Bulldog -> BT -> Sky, dont want to get kicked off sky due to excessive leeching, and then more downtime because of finding another isp or worse 3/4 week delay for bulldog.

My average dl is between 500gig to 800gig/month, think sky will get mad at me ? during summer months its not bad, winter is killer :D Just checking my ftp stats, it saying I downloaded 3.8tb since 14/03/05. In the past 4 years have been with with NTL,Pipex and Bulldog, none complained about FUP, or do they only start complaining if other users on your exchange/or nearby get affected by you leeching too much.

Also anyone any ideas about sky ping times, as Bulldog are average 42-48ms for bf2 servers.

Btw: Did some research on my town, seems 47% of residents have broadband access (2nd highest in the country), no wonder the plenty of broadband services availible, all trying to grab the bb hungry customers :)

I have know idea of ADSl, so I am going to copy and paste this info from sam Knows... does it mean I can get Sky Broadband? (16MB)

Is there anyway I cn find the distance I am from the exchange? I am currently on NTL10MB so I dont want to switch and find I now have the connection speed of 512KB per second.

The company I work for are doing some of the broadband installs for Sky in the southeast

I've been told their in my area (Herts) so I'll be going for the 16meg me thinks..!!

I live 1mile from exchange and with NTL I get the full 10meg so I'm hoping for good speeds with Sky too!!

go to www.samknows.com and do an exchange search there

None of the information from Samknows confirms that you'll either get Sky's free deal or won't.

You can get a straight line distance from Samknows, and the BT checker'll give you a (extremely rough) guesstimate based on postcode, but other than that there's no way of knowing till you get it.

Installed it for my parents about 3 weeks after applying for the connection.
For their needs the free option was fine (and the line can only go to 2.5Mb according to the guy who phones me up to register everything).

Installed and working fine for them - get occasional slow downs but nothing bad, and it sure beats their dial up!!!

Location: Cheltenham (if that makes a difference)

Its a pain we have to use Sky's router, after 12 months, do we own this or is it still rented?

Is there any word of any traffic shaping?

The router is yours to keep.

the fair use policy in terms of GB I have heard is around 200gb per month off peak they wont care but if your downin that at peak times it will affect you, so if your downing about 5-600 gb a month like I do stick with telewest or what you have.

Recieved my router via citylink today as well as the netgear wireless 108mbps USB stick.

However i have a few questions to fire at anyone who knows:

Basically, there is no option for inputting your username or password which is odd right? Is the router already got my sky details in it pre-built or something?

Also, it shows up as 7616kbps down and 448kbs up which was my old MaxDSL (aol) settings. Afaik, the MAX product of Sky has 778kbps upload and potential much higher download, so am i limited to my old line until AOL decide to cut the line?

Thats pritty much it really. :)

Edit: Not able to connect to sky 16meg yet if it was a little unclear :o

Not really. BT Central Plus doesn't require a username/password for authentication either.

AOL has nothing to do with it. If your modem connects (and can authenticate) you should be on Sky.

To get either ADSL2+ or the different upload rate, you'll need to be shifted onto Sky's LLU kit.

if your on the max package your on our llu, it will take about 7-10 days for the speeds to even out as the system works out witch one your line is handling best, remeber its UPTO 16mb speeds, if after 7-10 days your still getting 8mb phone up and get put on the mid package and save yourself 5 quid.

a lot of the lines are losing the connection and having problems past 12mb,not much we can do about it.

ps. yeh your router has it all set to work on our network, dont worry about it.

ive just joined sky bb, i will let you guys n girls know how it goes. i should be on max in 7 days time now

oh yes i was told the max package as no cap? right

Yes, but it is subject to their Fair Usage Policy, which be the looks of it, seems very good compared to other ISP's. :)

/Awaits line activation :D
