Sky Fibre Optic

Interesting, samknows still has our exchange down as 30th June for activation of FTTC but my dad had a phone call from BT recently and they offered him BT infinity which he's having installed next week!

So how do i find out when Sky will make their FTTC service available in my area?

It uses the same openreach network as BT so if infinity is available you should be able to get it through sky if they have LLU ( ADSL2 ) equipment in that exchange.

Ah never mind, found it (i hate skys website) order placed, bring on the 22nd :D

This is why it's best to wait if you can, not jump on as soon you hear of any launches, still wont be going with BT but I feel a little sorry for the people who have already signed up to the 40mb package on Sky.

When BT upgraded their customers in a similar scenario they allowed this didnt they for people who had already signed up before the 7Xmb was launched

Having spoke to a guy at Sky yesterday I'm now a little more at ease. :D

He said that once the 80mb package becomes available for standard Sky BB users to upgrade to then it will also be available to Sky Fibre subscribers as well.

Not sure how true his words were but I've found nothing to suggest he's not accurate.

Sky got me worried this morning, currently got no connection....thought it had somthing to do with yesterdays order for fttc but just turns out our exchange is having issues. Phew, had a frightened feeling id be without net for 2 weeks! Lol

Thought I would share my Sky Fibre order process with you.

I currently get 700 kbps to 1.1 mbps (download) with Sky unlimited ADSL - I live about 6.5km from the exchange so that has been my speed for a number of years.

I registered interest with BT Inifinity and they sent me an email to say I can order their fibre service as the FTTC is now available, so I called Sky for my MAC code. The girl on the end of the phone said she needs to check a few things and she comes back and tells me I can order Sky Fibre.

She waived the £50 installation fee as BT were also doing that for early adopters on the exchange and she also reduced my line rental to £1 pm for 12 months - RESULT.

I recieved my router on Saturday with the install happening this Thursday 10th May - I'm moving into the 21st Century.

Yep, Line Rental which has the usual cost of £12 is reduced to £1 per month for 12 months

I will still be paying £20 per month for the fibre broadband unlimited service

Oh I see.
You still did well, there.
You saved something like £180.

When I called Sky I only had one thing in mind to get my MAC code and join BT Infinity.

I have had a number of speed issues in the past 6 months and used them as leverage to negotiate my options. I told her that I'm happy to pay £6 pm more for the BT service if they are more stable unlike my recent experiences with Sky.

My area doesn't have Sky Fibre Broadband yet, sucks balls to be me.

i guess stuck with shoddy copper cable line for a couple more months.

Tomato has surprised me a lot. It's got some great tweaks in it (like being able to Name my MAC Wifi list items) and real time bandwidth graphs, but yes its super stable.

My Router has been super stable since day 1 though both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and I am glad I went with this router due to the 610N before being so bad (resets almost every day, power cycles mandatory at least 2 times a week, 5GHz DID NOT WORK just causing self reset loops). Almost put me off Linksys entirely.

Anyway back to the point. Its stable, but if you have 2.4GHz problems now I wouldn't expect them to go away. Also the only firmware out is for v1 E4200s, so if you have a v2 you might be in for a wait, which might not even end.

I don't have huge issues, just ping times are pretty high to the router on 2.4Ghz however my 2.4ghz is EXTREMELY crowded, running inssider shows upto 45 AP's at times! Hopefully switching to 5ghz will make this better. Just order intel 6300 card for my laptop. Will try out the tomato firmware when I get the chance.

Could you run some ping tests to your 4200 and post them up? Thanks

Not such a good experience from Sky CS so far (apologies for long story) - ordered fibre in early April, install date for 4/5/12. Friendly BT Open engineer came and installed phone line only, he was not aware of fibre installation. Called sky same day, was told someone else would be there within the hour for fibre install. Nobody came after a further few hours (and beyond scheduled install time given to me by Sky by 2hrs) -I called them back and was advised someone would arrive later still, and if nobody did to call by 1800 (it was 1400 now) another 4 hours wait. Unfortunately nobody turned up. I called Sky again to find out that the Openreach team were under resourced and so someone may turn up on Sat 5/5/12 at anytime.

Got a call the following day from BT Openreach engineer on Sat - he was planning on coming to install fibre so I went home to meet him. He called 30mins later and said he needed a specific part which he could not get hold of and another appointment would need to be made. Called Sky who said possibly Tuesday (yesterday) and that someone would call to confirm.

Nobody called yesterday so I took the liberty of calling, was advised by Sky that the earliest someone can come is the 21st of May!

Not happy with the service TBH, would be around a month and a half since the order date. Anybody else had similar problems with installation procedure?

Sounds to me like SKY are struggling to keep up with demand.
Also, my feeling is (and I could be wrong), is that BT Openreach give priority to BT customers, over the out sourced customers (ie. SKY). My guess is that if you were to cancel the order and order BT Infinity, that mysterious out of stock part, would suddenly be in-stock and you would get an earlier install date.

But hey ho. As long as you haven't been disconnected from your current DSL connection, another 2 week wait shouldn't be a problem. Unless of course, your current DSL connection sucks badly.

Well, right now I get around 4Mb/s down and 1 Mb/s up.
3.5mbps isn't so bad. In fact, once you get the new connection, unless you download hideous amount of media, you probably won't even notice the extra bandwidth. ;)

Not too much that Sky can do if Openreach don't do things properly :(

Nonsense. BT retail is completely separate.
