I've cancelled my order and installation for Sky HD for the moment as there are some serious issues with the receiver box and Pioneer plasmas at the moment. As far as I can tell there a problem with the hdmi connection causing damage to the media receiver on the 436xde's.

I had a pioneer engineer to my house this week and he also said this. The issue only arises like you said if the Sky HD box is connected via the HDMI cable.

Just been reading the large post over at avforums and the problem seems to be with the sky hd box connected via hdmi, there have been cases of peoples amps and other makes of tv suddenly not working via hdmi but ok with component, interesting read.

But the person who brought this box from sky in the first place will still have to pay there monthly contract for the next 12months

Nope, you can buy the box from sky for £399, so if you have subbed box at £299 you pay the extra £100 and its yours.

got a text from sky says that I will soon be able to control recordings for sky+ from my mobile. :D Its a good idea is u go out and forget to set it wonder how much they are gunna charge :( it allways seem to be the minimum charge sky can make is an extra tenner a month

Alledgedly 50p a throw !

A bit expensive for a facility I already have for free using my Slingbox.

I guess HD is selling well - I just ordered and was given an installation date of 1st September!

Oh well, gives me plenty of time to get the TV mounted on the wall I suppose.

Begining to think i'll wait. I had planned on doing an autumn upgrade of TV and Sky + box to HD. So far there seems to be more than a few problems, high prices whilst the people on the bleeding edge are queuing up to pay and some distinct issues on Sky with the bit rates being poor as more and more bandwidth gets eaten up.

Unfortunatly can only get NTL here but so far Telewest HD service sounds like the way to go...

May hang on till early next year once everything settles down a bit.

We have our Sky HD box connected now and I assume that they are using a HDMI cable as the component cable is no more, do Sky normally give you a free HDMI cable with each Sky HD box?

What I would like to know is whats the best HDMI cable available to buy? Im sure if Sky supply it they will source the cheapest ones they can get. Surely I would get more clarity if I paid for a 3rd party one?

Yes the box comes with a HDMI cable, mine did.

Does the sky hd box output on hdmi and component at the same time? I was thinking if I got one to feed hdmi into the HD tv in the living room, and run a set of component leads up to a HD tv upstairs. If would be best if you didn't have to go into a setting to change which output it uses, so does it simultaneously output on both?

not over a short distance say 1m-3m. It's a digital signal so a cheap cable doesn't matter. Over a long distance it does matter as cheap cables will lose the signal.

Had mine installed this morning. The Sky installer was actually very efficient and helpfull. I alread had Sky+ so no major work was required. He tested the signal and said that it was quite poor so he replaced the LNB and then installed the HD box. He connected up my audio cables and tested it worked on BBC HD while my existing card was paired with the new box.
I have to say I really notice a huge difference and thankfully for me so did the wife :)
I'm looking forward to watching some movies and football. I saw a little of the cricket today and it was amazing picture quality.

The Sky HD box outputs on all connections at the same time. I run HDMI to my lounge tv and a 10M component cable to another set. No need for any change of settings. If you want to use the remote with a Sky Eye upstairs you will also have to run coax from the RF2 output.

I have a Pioneer plasma. I thought using component is a MASSIVE quality reduction on HDMI? Does it even support 1080i anyway?

I think you may be confusing component with composite. Component will support 720p and 1080i. It may not be 100% as good as HDMI as it is anologue as opposed to digital so you sky box will do a DtoA then your TV will do an AtoD conversion. But to be totally honest I can't see any noticeable decrease in quality from my Sky HD box.

If you have a Pioneer Tv you have no choice about running component, run HDMI and fry your screens HDMI input.

There is a huge thread on AVF about this.

This man speaks the truth. It's a wise precaution not to use HDMI at the moment with Pioneer screens. The jury still seems to be out with regard to cause and fault on this one.

Linky

It's a long thread but worth the read if you have Pioneer kit.
