SKY HD

Had the email too. Price is very steep IMO:

£299 HD Box
£10 HD Subs

Minimum package is £15 PM. Obviously your not going to get HD movies or Sport for this. The total yearly cost of equipment + subs to the low package is £600.

To get the benefit of it you really need to be looking at adding Movies & Sport. This takes the sub to:

£42.50 for all channels x 12 = Per Annum £510
£10.00 for HD Subs x 12 = Per Annum £120
One off box charge = £300

Total yearly charge = £930.

Thats a lot of cash for TV subscription.

Telewest TVdrive is the only other option right now (apart from extravagant satellite setups) it's £50 installation (though some people have negotiated their way out of that) and £10 per month extra.

I plan on getting one in May in time for the world cup.

Not strictly true. It works out £630pa as the box is a one of payment. You're not paying £300 for a new box every year. But even so, it's still a huge sum of money, but then the original sky boxes cost this.

Its £100 cheaper than Sky+ launched at, its pretty cheap for such cutting edge tech. Mpeg4 decoders are not cheap.

I think the sub is ok, sure id love it too be cheaper but for the ammount of football i watch it is very good value (esp when you think a ticket for a game of football is £25+ - yes being there is better but 20 games a year vs hundreds for less per year)

Problem with TW is they ave no content, they dont make any content and to get Skys content you will have to pay more + wait for a long time. Having the WC in HD will be great on TW but what happens after that - only the BBC will have content on TW ?

But add the cost of sky+ multiroom :)

I have preordered !

don't forget you can sell the sky+ box so less than £299

Any news on when/if there will be a HD Sky+ box?

I was under the impression the HD box had recording capabilities and thus Sky+ too.

Yes, it has. I called Sky today. Unless you have the full package, you still have to pay the additional £10 p/m for the Sky+ PVR services, in addition to the £10 p/m for the HD subscrition.

So Sky+ launched at £399 + £10 p/m extra subscription

what sort of installation will be involved?

as my parents will want sky Hd but only if they can avoid letting sky install it as they're absolute cowboys from past experience, and my parents would rather get someone independent in to do it.

We already have a minidish and all the cabling in place for the normal sky digital.
If you have allready got a sky digital installation all they have to do is connect a new hd set top box top the existing dish feed and connect it to your HD ready TV :D

sounds simple enough that the sky guys might actually be able to carry it out without cocking it up. I'm sure they'lll find someway to screw it up though.

Pre-ordered my SkyHD just now - can't wait! :D

Price is, I think, reasonable.

Box price is the same as the 160GB Sky+ box (SkyHD is also 160GB), and the £10/month charge is what I expected anyhow.

The STB price is hefty.

Telewest will have the trail BBC HD channel which will trail for a year, starting off with the first World Cup game. Out of the Sky HD channels I expect them to easily get Artsworld HD, National Geographic HD and Discovery HD. Who knows if we'll have to pay extra for the Sky Sports/Movies/One channels but we'll get them sooner or later.

I'm sticking with Telewest, I'm already enjoying my HD (Telewest do actually have content, although only through Teleport which consists of about 10-15 eps which are free and SinCity which you have to pay £3.95 for :( ) You will be able to actually record HD content on the TW box too, although only abut 20hours but supports a external HDD.

160GB for SD is pretty reasonable - but for HD content I think thats pretty mean myself

Still going to try and get Sky HD installed (if my landlord will allow.....)

But don't forget the standard Sky+ box is only 40GB.

at the moment im paying £21 pm,
i want HD so i pay

£299 for box
£10 extra a month

now the box does that come with a hard drive readily built in? if so im there!

Yes but it seems you have a basic package at that price? Without films or sport there's not going to be much in high def apart from some of the American shows on sky one and documentaries.
