Sky HD

There is no point getting a HD box yet if you are going to be using it on a SD telly. With time the deals from sky will only get better or level off price-wise. You aren't going to gain anything by getting the box right now and will juet get slapped with £10/month ;).

Begbie, I an pretty sure J1nxy was referring to all the the revision 1 Thomson boxes, which were the only real option available to us normal folks for 1.5 years or so after HD was introduced. I refer to all the pace etc etc boxes with the comp missing as revision 2 :).

Not the new ones.

Samsung and Pace produce the new boxes, they have no component connection. Thomson has component, I've had both Pace and Thomson and currently have a Thomson which other the the FF/RR be a bit erratic seems ok. My Pace had lipsync problems over HDMI which made it unwatchable, and the PSU blew after 3 days as well.

As said the newer Thompson boxes do not have component.

The lip synch issues should now be resolved over HDMI.

But HDMI only outputs stereo.

Try the following (found on another forum) which seems to make the sync better with optical;

Turn off box
Pull out power cord
Keep finger on backup on top of box
Put in power cord
Wait until all lights stay on and screen says updating software

Seems to be fine for me now :)

Yeah there should have been an update end of Septmeber that resolved the issue or so I was told. So yep the above proccess should work if your box hasn't updated itself.

How can I find out whether I have the latest firmware?

Wow. Can't believe some people pay £95 a month for TV.

If it's what you enjoy then go for it.
Some people will easily spend £95 a month going out - maybe these people feel that curcling up in front of the television is their "going out".

There are also plenty of people who spend £95 on their hobby each month - so television to some people is a hobby.

I personally wouldn't spend that amount a month as I have more important things to throw my cash at.
But if people budget for it then go for it.

I can't believe some people spend hundreds of pounds a month drinking and smoking, but they do.

While I don't pay £95 a month, I will pay what I feel comfortable with for something I enjoy.

On a related note, does anyone think their Sky HD box is noisy?

Was lying in bed last night (box on standby) and all of a sudden it kicks into life, whirring and clicking away like it was defragging or something.

Stop downloading those pr0n channels then that clog up the HDD ;)

It is quite normal. Mine is switched off whenever it isn't being used and normally does that at least once a day. A lot of the time it does it in the middle of the night/5-7am too for ours at least.

Probably kicked on to download the anytime stuff that comes at night.

I dont find mine noisy, but its in the living room, i had a sky+ box in my bedroom before and got rid of it because the noise annoyed me.

I disabled the anytime as I hardly watch any sky in the bedroom, download pretty well everything that I watch. As the other half just watches rubbish on it I disabled instant rewind too and it helps overall noise levels and means that it stays silent when off except for the odd update in the early hours.

Well - time to do the maths.

Sky+ will cost you £159 and then on top whichever Sky package you decide to go for.
SkyHD will cost you £105 for box and install and then £120 for years subscription to HD, so £225 and then your Sky package on top.
So in the first year it will cost you an extra £70 for a service you won't use.

Advantage is you would have the SkyHD box - more HD capacity and be ready for when you do go HD.
If you go Sky+ now you'll then want to upgrade to SkyHD in a years time costing you even more.
