*** Sky Q Thread ***

Ah ok. I'll see if he'll do it for a few beers. I'm not even sure if he'll carry the install out tomorrow my dish is on the chimney and although not as high as a normal chimney its about the height of the gutters on a normal two story house.

And it looks like turning the wifi off on the main box has fixed the sound drops there as well.

I have to say it was a bit of a fluke as I only looked into the boxes wifi when I noticed last night my normal in house stuff on wifi was being a bit slow and on opening a wifi analyser noticed both boxes were on channel 36 the same as my main router, so I looked for a way to check the wifi on the boxes, found the engineering code and thought I would change the channel on them so as not to clash, but found the only option was to turn it off, which sorted my wifi slowness out and fixed the drops issue as a nice side effect.

The wifi quality is driving me mad actually...

I've got the main box and 2 mini boxes in a very modest 3 floor town house.. 1 box on each floor so I expected with this mesh setup I'd be fine..

I'm not at all convinced the mesh is even working because the top and bottom floors have poor wifi.. to the extent that my new ring doorbell is telling me it's got a v poor connection.

So I've bought a sky q booster.. thats somewhat refusing to connect to the router and when it does even though it's no more than 3m from the ring that's still saying it has a poor connection.

So.. how does one go about resetting and testing the mesh?

And is this in any way normal? I really don't want to have to speak to customer services.. as with most of us on here I'm sure it drives me mad to have people insist I do various things I know won't work (turn it on and off.. no really?).. I just never used to have any coverage issues previously on bt fibre in a bigger, better insulated house..

Very frustrating.

I mean if the sky q miniboxes are working on wifi would that suggest the mesh exists and is working?

One clear sign to me that something is wrong is that even though my speed is around 40-50mb and I can get that on wifi next to the main box.. that drops to 10-20mb max anywhere other than right on top of the router... I've never seen distance speed loss like it

what is the quality of UHD live football on sky Q as well as downloaded movies? is it proper 4K? what encoding is it? is it just the same as say netflix 4K? so similar to 1080p blu ray quality.

Well 24hrs after having Q installed im getting the sound drop out issues on my main box every few minutes. The signal from the sky box isnt being transmitted to the amp and the amp is showing its loosing the input signal. I have read that it disabling the wifi on the box fixes the issue so I have just tried that, i'll update with my findings.

For info anyone wanted to try it go into the engineering menu (press home then highlight settings but dont select them, then type 0,0,1 select and they under network in there).

Football is a noticeable improvement on 1080p, but I think it's all of 'Netflix 4K' quality by and large.

No HDR at the moment on live broadcasts, but you probably know that already.

If you read that on the 130 page skyforums thread then that is my resolution :)

See few posts earlier from me.

The optical socket on my mini box has fallen apart. Called them up, they didn't know what I was talking about, it apparently doesn't have anything remotely optical.... Anyway after a bit of messing about there's now a technician coming to replace it, god knows why they need to send someone out, but whatever it's not costing me anything.

Why are Sky so crap?!

After reading lots of peoples disaster stories about mini boxes and general poor performance from SkyQ I was worried, but honestly, so far I'm really impressed with mine.

I have a standard 1Tb Q box and a mini box upstairs, both connected via WiFi and both work great. I'm only using a Vermin Superhub 3 router but so far its been flawless. I had expected to have to wire in both boxes but fingers crossed WiFi will continue to play nice :) Surely I'm not the minority?! :D

Mine was fine for the first couple of months, but drops out at least once a week now.

Also, I'm pretty sure the communication to your mini doesn't use your router (maybe I'm wrong?)

Ah don't say that, I'm paranoid I have a ticking time bomb now :D

So the mini works via a direct link to the main box rather than your network? Interesting! Why do people say wiring the box via ethernet improves stability massively then?

My mini's are forever dropping signals and stuff. It gets really annoying. I can just about cope with it, the wife goes mental though. She has zero patience for any messing about.

I had heard that the mini boxes run off the Sky Hubs network, and boost your wifi in their local area. Not sure how accurate that is though.

I used a signal monitor tool to move my router channel to make sure it doesn't clash with the Q.
My mini has a wire and doesn't seem to drop at all. Most crashes are due to the main box - probably only 2 or 3 in the last year.
Andi.
