*** Sky Q Thread ***

Morning guys

thought I read somewhere that Sky are no longer charging for line rental but I need to call to get it changed, is that correct or am I going mad?

thanks!
Slightly true, they no longer charge a separate charge for line rental, its included in the price as far as im aware! you have to switch to their new broadband package to have the line rental included.

So I'm having to power cycle my Sky Q box once or twice a days as lots of channels are dropping out, just display a blue screen. It's always the same channels. Is this likely to be the LNB or one of the tuners in the Q box failing? Is there anything I can try myself prior to getting Sky in as there's quite a few recordings unwatched on the box so if there's a fix I can do it might gain me some time.

Is the wide lnb used for Sky Q worse for signal or did Sky just do a bad install?

When I was upgraded to Sky Q, Sky just fitted a brand new dish in a different place, because they didn't want to run cables across the roof to the old dish. On the old standard sky hd I got 90% signal strength and the picture was fine in everything except really heavy rain. With Sky Q the signal strength is only 60% and breaks up easier and even light rain can cause issues.
So is the wide lnb worse or just not as good install?

Thanks.

That's interesting, I'm getting both the 2GB Sky Q box sometimes showing that there is a connectivity problem and the same appears on the mini from time to time. I've had the same error come up on recordings too. Seems to happen when it is hot weather and is in a well ventilated place however it is one of the older Sky Q boxes with the internal PSU, I can quite often hear the fan working hard inside it too, mostly and understandably with UHD content. I don't want to book an engineer visit as it is so unpredictable making the fault impossible to replicate and I don't want to end up paying out for the engineer visit when it is seemingly working fine. I seem to remember hearing (maybe in this post) that there were PSU cooling issues and that the new boxes now have an external PSU.

There are some issues where if the box isn’t set to Eco (Home, settings, preferences, standby mode) then a long uptime, several weeks, can cause unusual things to happen with recordings and other maladies. Even if it is set to Eco sometimes the box isn’t rebooting correctly.

Just called SkyQ customer services after I noticed my phone/broadband bill had gone up by £10 and they moved me from "Sky Fibre Max" to "Sky Super Fast Broadband" which meant they no longer charge me for line rental so save £19 is this just marketing with the packages, so just the £27.00 for Fibre, question is should I have held out for more and said I'd leave (SkyQ contract up in Jan 2020) as I have a cooling off period

  • £27 Sky Fibre
  • £10 Sky talk Anytime (In-laws use the landline in the annex next door

Thanks

Any idea how long it will be until Sky TV live boradcasts are supplemented by the broadband connection when there's storms? I missed about 10 minutes of a game on Sunday and one of the teams scored, pretty frustrating!

The mention of IP has been floated for a few years now - i know we actually have some SkyTV staff here, I wonder if they could comment? Personally i dont wish to have a dish on my house, and planning permission will be tough for one on a property which i am buying. IP would be attractive to people like me.

That's one of the things I love about the HD+ boxes. They'll last for silly amounts of months before a power down needs to happen. Think I had over 6 months most times which was either from power cuts or system upgrades.

Thanks for the info, I'll have a look at this later on when I get home and see over the next few weeks how I get on.

But after a power cycle does it take another few months to mess up again? Mine Q is struggling to make the next 12 hours before requiring another power cycle. I don't thing I have Eco mode on, will check later.

hi guys, having sky q installed this weekend. Do sky q installers carry the hybrid LNB as standard?

When i had moved into the house there were already 2 sky dishes installed. Currently these both have Octo LNBs attached with 14 of the 16 connections wired up to provide dual/single feeds to multiple rooms in the house. One of them has 6 in use and luckily this will the one i want sky q to be connected to.

I think the hybrid LNB has 6 connections in total - 2 for sky q and 4 for regular satellite/freesat. Do i have to call sky beforehand to ensure they carry the right LNB with them?

I would imagine the engineers van will contain everything he needs, including spare stuff.

Rememberthe Q is the only box that connects directly to the dish. All mini boxes are wireless and connect over that to main box.

I'm finding the mini box I have is getting progressively slower and less responsive. I got it not long after Sky Q was released and presumably it is fitted with a terrible old CPU and 32Kb Ram. Does anyone know if Sky have updated the hardware in their mini boxes recently? If so, I'll ask them to send me a replacement.

I very much doubt that there is only 32kb of ram in the mini boxes
