*** Sky Q Thread ***

It's a Samsung ju6800. Its not HDR certified but it does do a pretty good job of hdr.

That's a 2015 model so the specs would have been set in 2014, before any universal HDR formats were fully certified so you're lucky to get any form of HDR out of it. It might just be a pseudo-HDR effect that it creates, unless there was some form of firmware update that enabled something. There are no HDR specs listed for it all on the Samsung website. If you like the image quality then stick with it, you're not missing much in terms of HDR on SkyQ. It's distinctly average so far.

Anybody know what the deal is with Q’s WiFi?

I have 3 Sky Q associated devices on my WiFi. My main Q, my Q Mini but I also have a 3rd device called “Bskyb” with the last 4 parts of the MAC appending.

I assume it’s something to do with it’s retarded mesh network it’s designed to be used with?

Yeah they form and internal network and you’ll likely see many MAC addresses.

Indeed, kind of annoying, it’s just unnecessary when you’ve got a decent network setup. But I get it must be useful for the average consumer.

Any idea what the device/function is of the device with the “Bskyb” identifier? It’s got just a few kb of use. Otherwise I might just block it and see what breaks.

No idea, I’ve never extensively looked into it, but it doesn’t cause harm so why block it?

I know it's old but the HDR isn't too bad, it's a 8bit+FRC and has some magical nanocrystal coating. You can definitely see the difference if you turn HDR off on stuff like games.

Yep. Things get even more confusing if you connect everything up by ethernet as you'll then end up with 4 devices showing. Two related to the main box, two to the mini and the IP address for the Mini box will be shown as bing connected to the switch port that the main box is physically connected to, not the switch port where the Mini is physically connected to.

I have all the wireless disabled through the hidden admin menu thing. If you have cables run everywhere you don't need it. I use a Unifi access point as even with the router, skq box and 2 mini boxes wireless coverage was pretty poor.

I've got wireless disabled on both boxes too but the Mini box still tells me it's enabled when I check in the installer menu. I don't see the wireless network broadcasting that the Mini box mentions but I do see a hidden network in the house with full signal strength so I think it's still broadcasting albeit with a hidden SSID.

Yep, the WiFi implementation is awful. There's the potential for STP to kick in and cause all sorts of problems if you're not careful which for your average home user is a recipe for stuff not working.

Hi Peeps

Need some help with working out what to do with Bill, just checked and a few deals ran out a few months ago and I didn't notice.

Currently Paying

£24 Sky Entertainment
£5 Sky Box Sets
£5 Sky Kids
£15 Sky Cinema (not watching as much as I used to, and have separately to sky Apple TV+ and Prime and Disney + mostly picked up free or on offer)
£6 Sky HD
£14 Sky Multi Screen (which is effectively my Q box plus mini)
£19 Line Rental
£5 Sky Talk Evening and Weekends
£24 Fibre Max

Which is a ffairly chunky £117 a month

Advice appreciated, my Apple TV+ and Disney+ run out in March so wondered if Signature might be advantageous where you seem to be able to turn packages on and off. Also wondering if Vodfone or similar might knock a chunk out of that phone and fibre bill.

edit: a quick clarification added

I get all that (not Disney+) for about £80 a month. Not sure if that's the best deal out there, though.

Daft question, we have Sky Q in our house now, main box wired in 1 room, sky q mini in another. It's ok, but not as good as the previous Sky HD+ multiroom as the recording are centralised and slight loss in quality.

Is there any way to have two separate SkyQ 1tb boxes on a single account (so replace the mini with another Sky Q box)? There are 2 cables already installed from the Sky HD setup, if it is possible to have the two separate boxes is there a 4 port LNB for the dish that supports Sky Q?

If not, I might look to install an ethernet cable and run it over ethernet to see if it improves

I don’t know the answer to your question, however, we don’t experience any difference in quality on our Q Mini in the bedroom, it’s perfectly fine.

Is the Q Mini far away from the main Q box?

Its not that far away, maybe 4 metres and it’s only a slight decrease in quality, with occasional de sync of audio in rare occasions and on some channels. Could it be bit rates on some channels for Sky q are lower? The test the sky engineer did showed green for the mesh between the main box and mini, I might break out the long Ethernet cable and test first before drilling
