*** Sky Q Thread ***

The picture quality on our new 4k TV is better than on the old HD box. Great to be able to do multiple recordings. Operation on mini and iPad is flawless. Only one minor niggle and that is the new size of the program guide which now displays less time slots. Overall very pleased with it so far.

Some good tips and tricks here:

The Sky Q app runs on the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 but not on the Galaxy Note 5.

BT Sport not running on the mini box so I've called BT and they said it will be added shortly. Said it will be free but we shall see.

I thought we would be paying more for UHD when it arrives but not so:

•What will the additional charge for UHD subscription be?

•There will not be any additional subscription charge for viewing any UHD programmes when they are available, they will be included in Sky Q Silver subscription bundle.

How is everyone finding the new touch remote? It's going to take some adjustment for me as I can use the old remote without even looking, so any change to that is going to irritate me for some time.

My wife had a go and refuses to use it and is using the 'normal' one. Not really unexpected as you should see her using a smartphone. :D

I'm using the touch and have got used to it but it's not easy to use without looking and the touch bar above the pad is too sensitive. Scrolling down is a bit of a pain. I think it's a bit of a gimmick.

So we have one each now. The one you get with the mini is not touch.

I had a very brief play with the touch remote the other week at a Sky stand in the local shopping centre.

Felt bizarre - unless I was getting it totally wrong, it appeared you needed to swipe right to progress through the menus and left to back up which felt completely wrong as the action of swiping right moved you further to the right in the onscreen menus which is backwards, or am I missing something?

Do you get another, more normal remote with buttons?

It is a bit naff with the swiping, horizontal across screen is fine but scrolling up/down through the program guide gives you thumb ache using one hand. Two handed operation is self defeating in my opinion. I think it's a bit of a gimmick.

We got two with the silver box, normal/touch and a normal with the mini.

We have a communal satellite dish so not sure how that will work

A Sky Q ready upgrade is an enhancement to your existing communal system where a DSCR (Digital Single Cable Router - switch containing Ethan –Ready technology) switch is fitted at the head end (Location of switches and other equipment) allowing anyone that wants Sky Q to be connected. This new switch will work with either Sky Q or Sky+ customers.

So a week on my only real grumble is the touch control which I'm lumbered with as my wife won't use. You'll end up with RSI trying to scroll one handed using your thumb. The fast forward/rewind is too sensitive and I keep managing to trigger it when I pick the thing up. As I said before it is just a gimmick. I'll persevere for a few more weeks with it.

Having some serious issues with the HDMI controls on my Sony TV with the new Sky Q box plugged in!

I used to be able to use my Sony remote with my Intel NUC running Kodi as well as my soundbase kicking in perfectly when switching inputs but with the Sky Q box plugged in it's all random and very hit and miss as to whether either work now!

I've tried turning HDMI control on and off on the Sky box but it doesn't seem to make any difference!!??!!

Very annoying to say the least, especially when they all worked perfectly when the old Sky HD box was plugged in!

There are quite a few issues with HDMI and ARC. Boxes not coming out of standby when connections are changed, devices not working under control.

Switching off Dolby sound both HDMI and Optical can make a change to ARC control.

I've had Sky Q for a couple of weeks now and I've had to reset the mini box at least half a dozen times!

Yes it's nice to be able to access content on the main box downstairs but it's not even close to the reliability of multi-room imo!

Our mini box is used daily since we've had it installed and it has been flawless. Are you a distance away from the main box?
