*** Sky Q Thread ***

Well I got reverted back to good old Sky HD at the weekend and all of my hardware compatibility problems have been solved! :D

Oh TV Guide button - how I've missed you! :p

Interestingly the engineer that came said there were quite a few people switching back on his schedule!

Anyway, new 2TB main box and a new WiFi box for the bedroom all installed and working a treat - couldn't be happier!

Thank you, but I think thats still too much for me. I have got the £25 deal for the complete package, that will still go up to around £88, correct?

This is why Sky Q is turning into a Dodo.

Ok, my install is on Tuesday, just TV as my phone and broadband is with VM.

Just to summarise, as I understand it the installer will be ok connecting the Silver box to my cabled network rather than Wifi if I ask him to but, with the mini, I'm best off leaving him to connect this to the Silver via Wifi then reconfigure it to Ethernet after he's gone. Is that a fair assumption?

From what I can gather the installers will refuse point blank to connect the mini via Ethernet. Also, will the Silver still create its own Wifi network for the mini to connect via or will it use my own Wifi?

How much is that combo setting you back a month?

I wonder what will happen to people who try the cancellation rigmarole at the end of the 18 months to get a better deal. Will the fact Sky have their hardware back give them an extra bargaining tool or weaken their hand, the 'ex' customer will have to return the kit and thus make a more conscious decision to re-subscribe and wait for a new installation date? Can't decide if I'd have a better hand or not......

OOI who pays to return the kit when a subscriber cancels?

The Sky Q Silver is the friends & family deal MissChief kindly sorted for me which is £56 including free Sports & Movies.

I have 200mb broadband from VM which costs me £22 (rising to £25 in October) and have paid for my line rental up front at £164 for the year.

So all in I'll be paying about £92 per month.

That is interesting. Usability or reliability?

Bit of both to be honest, I found that the Silver box messed with my soundbase and Sony TV remote functionality and the mini box juddered a touch when the main box was in use!

My main issue though is the awkward user interface - 5 or 6 button presses to simply get to the TV guide instead of one, small remote control makes one handed operation tricky (and that's without even mentioning the completely useless touch/swipe remote!), stupidly bright Q on playback, not being able to start a recording at a pre-determined time - I could go on and on to be honest!

I'm sure it will mature with a few firmware updates over time but I refuse to pay more per month to be a Sky beta tester!

We've just left Sky after 4 years+. We had 'fibre' broadband, phone, multi-room TV with HD family pack + Sports. They were expecting an extra £10 a month for the same bundle as they could no longer match the offers we had previously. In the process of switching to BT now - I can't wait to get rid of that awful SR102!

All installed! :)

Went very smoothly, installer was a nice chap. Main Silver box connected via Ethernet to my router and all up and running with no trouble, then the mini connected via Wifi. This worked fine but I've just switched it over to Ethernet too.

Quite impressed from my limited play thus far. All seems to work flawlessly (although time will tell obviously) and a very slick interface compared to the old +HD system. Have hooked up my iPad via the Q app and that works too and checked my Sky Go Extra is working for when away from home and remote recording via the Sky + app.

Big thanks again to MissChief for the friends & family deal on this! :)

Update...

I noticed that, once both boxes were on Ethernet, each was still pointlessly generating a separate Wifi network. I've now disabled Wifi entirely on both boxes.

Only weird thing (glitch?) I've found thus far is some content (for example Terminator Genisys on the movie channels) is prompting me for my PIN despite my having disabled all parental settings completely. Not sure what's going on here.

EDIT: On searching it appears this is an Ofcom requirement and Sky's hands are tied. Regardless of settings, age-restricted content before the watershed (generally movie channels and on-demand content) will ask for the PIN.

I have a feeling they did it this way to stop all the loyal customers cancelling and resubscribing for a cheaper deal.
