*** Sky Q Thread ***

They've said on FB that there will be sports, movies and 'entertainment' but I suspect most of the movies will be via On Demand rather than a movie channel. Not sure about entertainment either mind you. Live TV will come via satellite, not via Broadband as BT Sport does.

Have Sky actually said what channels they plan to show in UHD on Sky Q ?

No they haven't but there is expected to be an entertainment channel which should have stuff from Atlantic, Sky, etc. A dedicated movie channel which we know will have Sony blockbusters. Next season Premier League games will be in 4K and at some point Formula One will be the same. It is also quite possible that there will also be an on demand 4K offering. So plenty to look forward to!

On Demand UHD is going to be interesting as we'll find out just how many people can sustain a 25mbps stream.

On Demand doesn't work that way. While it's a download it's not a stream as such. When you choose to download something via OD you save it to the HDD then watch it direct from the drive. For someone with a slow connection this may mean it takes a while for content to become viewable. The box will make every effort to give a seamless watching experience. In some cases you may not be able to view for up to an hour for a HD movie on a <4Meg connection, sometimes longer for a very slow connection. This also means when you choose something from OD it also gets stored on your box.

I know the box acts intelligently and starts streaming then allows you to start watching when there's enough of it buffered and providing it's downloading fast enough.

I'm not saying that those with slow connections won't be able to watch UHD content, just that they may be in for a rude awakening when they realise that their otherwise perfectly fine connection isn't up to the job and they have to wait for an hour before being able to watch on-demand UHD content.

Nothing that can be done about that of course but I predict a lot of whiney calls to Sky support nonetheless :)

I've just seen off some scrote pretending to be a Sky engineer doing upgrades. He had no ID and when I demanded some he beetled off to his van (no Sky logo) and drove off. I've reported the incident to the police, of course. I doubt they'll do anything, but at least it's on record.

Good for you... Need to be careful about folks wondering into your house.

We have bags of salt delivered for our water softener over 6-12 months. Previously they've always been delivered and left out on the drive. Last time my partner was in, so walked out, opened up the garage door to let them put them straight in the garage. Two nights later, the TV in the garage was taken...

Used a friend and family code for my Mother's install last year, it will be due to expire soon and jump to a high price. Any advice on how to avoid this?

Thanks.

Getting really bad audio crackling and dropouts after a couple of days that only a reboot sorts, regretting jumping in so early.

Any fix? My audio is running through hdmi into a Yamaha amp.

There are sounds issues being reported and all you can do is wait for a firmware update.

Not heard of crackling before but shedloads of people, myself included, are getting dropouts to some degree.

Sky really need to update people to at least say they're aware and working on fixes. So far we've heard nothing.
