*** Sky Q Thread ***

The lowest quality channels (which will form the majority) all use a similar profile of 544x576 @ 2Mbps MPEG-2 with 128kbps MP2 audio. That's about 1/3 of a typical DVD. If it's DVB-S2 then it's the same but with more efficient codecs and the video bandwidth is a bit less (down to 1Mbps in some cases). You can just about squeeze 4-5 of these channels into the bandwidth of one HD channel. They're great for filler channels to make Sky packages more attractive.

I guess it's magnified by watching older series as well, a lot of stuff pre 2000 looks bad.

This is why I've always said, if they can't deliver enough 1080 how can they deliver 4K with good bitrates. They can't even deliver Dolby in 640Kbps.

Agreed, until the people that deliver our HD/4K content agree to some minimum bitrate numbers then this is all for nought.

Anyone had the dreaded noisy box yet?

started hearing a loud buzzing sound last night and realized it was the box... moving the box around seems to stop it so its either a dodgy hard drive and more likely the cooling fan making the buzzing sounds...

a reboot seems to have cured it for now.

Well, Q silver now installed with 2 mini boxes. Engineer was a nice chap, and it was a very painless job for him....although he mentioned the amount of stuff on the network was the most he had ever seen  which surprised me; guess that shows how many connected things our household has

Anywhoooo, only a limited time to play with the system, but the children definitely like having a full Sky service in there and eldest is attached to Q app on her iPad!

Had Sky Q installed today with one mini box. So far so good although was surprised the boxes only have 10/100Mb Ethernet so opted for the wireless which in theory should be faster being AC. Both boxes connected to Q hub with wireless and working without problems.

Really like the new interface will take a bit of getting used to but seems to work well. Back room TV will use the swipe remote but going to setup the front room one with my harmoney remote tonight we it controlled my amp and all other devices like my media PC.

When can we expect to see more storage options?
I have two 2Tb HD boxes, one of which is used by a lodger. Switching to a single 2Tb shared device for Sky Q doesn't seem very practical.
Are there user profiles on Sky Q, or some way of dividing/flagging content between devices?

What are the subtitles like? Are they smaller and less chunky (higher resolution)?
With the increased focus for on-demand content, is more content being subtitled as this has been very poor to date?

There a rumour that a bigger box will be released 'soon'.
User profiles or folders has been requested and the developers are aware.
Subtitles will be coming to on demand for all boxes but I don't have a date.

So my Q install has generally been fine, but twice have experienced a message showing 'Technical Fault' and no channel works........each time the only solution appears to have been to pull the plug on the main box, and then plug back in.....both mini boxes and the main box are all essentially unable to show any channel until I do this - anyone else had similar, and - if so - any better solution?

Yes a few people have had this - seems to be caused by signal interruption and the box failing to recover. There were a large number of people affected during the storms last week.

Bare with it guys. That's all I can say.

Interesting comment. Do you work for Sky and know something we don't? ;)

Seen someone else say there's an update due soon. If and when it comes, I just hope it has a raft of fixes and isn't just the UHD enabling update and nothing else!
