*** Sky Q Thread ***

When the 007 channel came to Sky HD many years ago, did you see them? They were as good as Blu-ray for clarity and pristine picture.

They have slowly cut the bitrate over the years BBC HD used to average over 20mbps and its average is now down to 9-11mbps, the only set of channels that dont get touched(reduced) bitrate wise are the sky sports channels.

Some of the banding is so nasty on some of the channels, lower coloured gradients are in steps. Some of the shadow detail bounces in blocks.

I've got an LG OLED tv. Love the thing but it crucifies Sky. I sometimes have to double check whether I'm even on a HD channel

Because that's where the first cut in the bitrate comes shadow detail and black tones, the reason being that nothing until OLED could go that low(even plasma)and show details in the low ire's(1-4) so there was no need to show detail that no tv could produce never mind see, and until OLED becomes mainstream it will continue to be the first thing cut:rolleyes:

This is why I've always said, if they can't deliver enough 1080 how can they deliver 4K with good bitrates. They can't even deliver Dolby in 640Kbps.

You look at Netflix and Amazon 4K there bitrates are around the 20-25mbps mark so sky just have to put the bitrates back up to HD release levels and 4K will look quite good

Any news on a software update yet? Had to reboot my box twice so far today. Most buggy piece of tech I have had in years!

How true it is I do not know but so many have said for years Sky's transmissions are saturated hence all the cut in bitrates. Yet they have all these endless SD as well as new SD and +1 channels.

My thought as well. I doubt very much that hardly any of Sky's customers is still using an SD tv. So why do they saturate the available channels with SD ? My answer, it makes it look like they are giving us a wide and varied choice. As someone that has been using an OLED since Christmas, i can safely say that SD looks complete crap and is not a choice i would consider now.
Much better if they at least dump all the +1 SD channels and use the bandwidth to up the bitrates on all the HD channels. Less channels and higher quality is the way i would like to see things go............................but hang on, how are they going to justify the monthly cost with less channels mmmmmmmm ?

Some of those +1 channels are that poor, they must be half of SD which would make them an eighth of HD as a guess. Some of those channels look like a bad internet rip.

Many of the +1 and SD channels aren't controlled by Sky and they pay their carriage and EPG fees like everyone else.
