sleep paralysis

All I can see is you have kids. For the love of god tell them about it. I thought I was odd for years.

I have kids and i know what you mean.

Trouble is you can create a problem by suggestion so it's very fine line you have to tread.

But agreed, if they hint at something remotely similar - discuss it with them.

Tahrs the thing there's no way I would have told anyone at that age.
I mean a room crawling with snakes at night or being injected in the stomach by doctors. Snake one is as long as I remember and the doctor ones probably started when I was 11ish. It was only when my mum was watching a documentary on it when I was about 15 did everything suddenly make sense.

I agree it's a toughy one.

I have had this a few times, when I get it I always feel like I got a pillow over my face or I am suffocating but I cannot move to take the pillow away, sometimes I just cannot move but I can look around the room. Its feels so real but sometimes I wake up and my TV is on yet it wasn't when I had the paralysis which is why I just think it was a bad dream,i normaly get it when i need to be up at a certain time, say if i need to be up early in the morning i get it through the night, and normaly i wake up but cannot move and i look at the clock and i am late but i fall back asleep then wake up at the right time, its very wierd

I've suffered sleep paralysis for the last couple of years. I'll have a period of a few weeks where I'll get an attack every night, then nothing for a while, only for it to come back again.

I find the whole experience truly terrifying. For me, I'm usually having a dream, the culmination of which is for me to lash out at the dream's antagonist which is when I enter the paralysis. I try and try to prod the missus so she can wake me, but can't move. /shudders/ makes me shiver just thinking about it.

Trust me when I say you're not missing out on anything if you've not experienced it.

what i was always told is its just a dream your never actually awake, you just feel awake, you see things in the room, that make you think its real, your girlfriend could be next to you, everything feels real, and after a few minutes it feels like it goes away and you can move ,but when it actually goes away your waking up.

As much as I dislike the condition, as an adult, I at least have the ability to reason through the process once awake.

I find the thought of/my kids suffering from a similar condition far more disconcerting – and sympathise that you had a condition at such an early age.

My wife is a young head teacher and has noticed an increase in kids with similar problems (still a very minor percentage) over the past 5 years – read into that what you will – but at least parents are becoming more aware and it’s ‘starting’ to be openly discussed (in some cases at least.).

When I was much younger (maybe 7 - 13) I use to regularly dream of being shot/stabbed/something in the back and always wake up with a sort of cramp where I cant stop arching backwards.

Ok typed out... that really doesnt sound normal.

You can actually induce this very easily by setting an alarm for a time you will be asleep usually ( 6am if you usually wake up at 8ish), and returning to sleep with 10 minute secession.

after fifth sleep or so, the brain soon loses track and confuses awake state to lucid dreaming. therefore you dream of your most recent view, which is most likely to be your ceiling or bedroom wall. The reason you can't breath is probably down to the fact that your brain forgets to switch to auto respiratory thingy (for sleep).

Saw this on tv, and tried it myself :P

Had it happen to me several times.

First time i was convinced i must have suffered from a stroke. I could still control my breathing but i couldn't talk or move any limbs. It was actually a terrifying experience.

Now it's an annoyance, fortunately it only happens once in a blue moon .

does anyone suffer from this?
just ive been getting it quite recently if I try to go to sleep when I shouldnt be I feel I get trapped and can only move my legs and the rooms sspinning and feel I am getting crushed lol
its totally weird but I want up in a panic

has anyone had this before ??

Yes I used to get this as a kid but it went away when I moved out.

Turns out it was Mother tucking me in too tightly :p

I had a friend that had a few experiences with it and he had been through some emotional and psychological problems. He said that he woke up and he felt like someone was sitting on his chest and he could not move his legs and he felt like he was dreaming.

I would say that it could be related to breathing or blood flow problems.

Ahh good old night terrors. I've been getting these randomly on and off since I was 10ish. The first time I had it I was staying in my dad's gfs house for the first time ever which was this big creepy cottage. I woke up in the middle of the night not being able to move and with a feeling of someone or something ontop of me pushing me into bed. I finally snapped out of it and turned the lamp on and obviously nothing was there.

Having never heard of SP before, I instantly assumed it was a ghost and refused to stay there. I continued to experience it over the years, in different forms. Sometimes I could just see someone stood by my bed watching me, I could never see their face though and couldn't move at all.

2 years ago during summer just after my 1st year at uni, I got myself a nightshift job. The pay was good and as it was only for a few months I thought I'd be able to hack it. However, towards the end of it I suffered from sleep paralysis multiple times EVERY time I went to sleep, it was terrible. Apparently a dramatic change in your sleeping pattern can cause this. I still get it every now and then, mainly if I sleep in really long, and it's always the same thing now and it's horrible. I can hear someone sprinting up the stairs/along the corridor, laughing like a total maniac before coming into my room, then I can just see them standing there but again I can never see their face. It's scary how real it is, still hate it.

Best way to get out of it is to wiggle your toes and start breathing really fast.

I had it this morning, very strange, I get it every couple of months but it was a bit different this time!

I have a wardrobe at th bottom of my bed, last night I left one of the doors open, for no particular reason. I woke up this morning and couldn't move, there was a silhouette created from the shadows/clothing I could see that looked exactly like a woman dressed in black, viewed side on, the paralysis didn't stop this time, normally it subsides after what seems like about 20-30 seconds, this time I went back to sleep. I would have said it was a dream however I woke up shortly afterwards and the view looked exactly the same, but I couldn't see the silhouette as clearly, maybe the light in the room had changed or I was just viewing it with different eyes :D

A bit crazy though! My girlfriend was staying over too and I could sense her lying next to me, if she had woken up and tried to move me/speak to me that would have been nuts, probably freak her out big time :p
