On the other hand, how funny is that - guy sits in a traffic with his window open, breathing in fumes and complains about second hand smoke. It's kind of like complaining about someone's aftershave in paint factory.

it annoys me you can be done for sitting at traffic lights having a drink but if you light up your some how exempt, lighting up while driving is probably worse than sending a text so should equal 3 points and £80 same as phones

beacuse you need to read the writing on the box and press a combimation of 40 digits to get the lighter to light?

Yeah because smoking will cause you not to pay attention to the road, well to the same extent as phone would.

I don't care one iota that they are killing themselves (though object to my NI contributions ultimately paying for their treatment)

What about the silly amount of tax that smokers pay that more than covers their treatment, not to mention their shorter life compared to us that don't smoke.

If everyone gave up smoking then there would be a huge shortfall of money in the coffers, you should thank them for paying for you!

Writing a text requires knowing what you're writing and typing it out, looking at the screen, if you're not looking at the screen you'll be concentrating on knowing where the buttons are to press as you hide the phone from the police. No matter what you say, its the similar effect as having a full on conversation while driving, yet you've disabled one of your hands for a while.

Lighting a cigarette takes one flick of the thumb and you dont even have to look it at it while lighting.

i used to smoke and thought nothing of lighting up in the car, i've been stopped for 2 years now and when i get in a smokers car the stench is foul, its like sitting in a dirty big ash tray, its quite funny to see smokers dangling their arms out of windows at traffic lights so as the smoke doesnt go in the car.
