So are the M5/M6 identical?

I prefer the looks of the M5, don't mind the M6 either, but would be sorely tempted by an M5 if/when I need 4 doors.

I strongly disagree. I think BMW's entire range is stunning (bar the 1 series, but I don't dislike it) and people need to actually evaluate the cars' image until the automatic "BMW sucks" thing kicks in. If anyone needs design lessons it's Audi and Mercedes because all their cars look identical.

Too right. Audi's cars all look identical at the minute, they just get fatter as you go up the numbers. Merc are not quite as bad, but in the case of the C and the CL, they look so alike to the point that the CL looks soooo plain and cheap. Audi, BM and Merc all have their own set grille styling at the front and other similar cues. Audi and Merc make many of their cars look almost identical when looking front-on; BMW have genuine differences in each class while still keeping to many of their traditional styling touches.
Not saying that Audi and Merc don't make some stunning-looking cars though

Personally I'm not a big fan of the 6-series, I think it's overpriced for what it is, the styling has never just been perfect for me, the 5-series is bigger (I like big cars) and looks much more aggressive and meaty methinks.

I think id prefer the M6 if its lighter.

See, now you're into the realms of the internet test-driver.

If you had the money there's no way you'd make a decision between those two cars purely on the basis that one weighs 100kg less than the other.

That's why I would take the M5. Brutally fast, you can pick up all your mates without having to get out to let them in, and you've still got the boot space and all that practically whilst being brilliantly fast.

True true, but not only is it lighter, it looks better as well, and more aerodynamic.

If I was that concerned about weight, I probably wouldn't be buying either ;)

FWIW the M6 was born in the ugly tree, but fell out at birth hitting every branch on the way down. Then a tramp came along and beat it with one of the fallen ugly branches.

OK. People who hate the M6, what sort of cars do you think look good then?

I didn't realise it had become cool to dislike attractive looking cars. Based on similarities, if you hate the M6 then you must equally despise Aston Martins.

To me, this is an expensive, luxury, good-looking sports car.

And this, whilst cool, looks like it was bought by an ex-chav who now has a bit of money. It just doesn't have the style of maturity of the M6. It looks like a street-racing car.

Those M6 wheels look about 15" in that picture, even though they obviously aren't.

Not when you're standing next to one in the metal they don't :p ...but I take your point about the lower end 5's

Say whatever you like about the M6, a few things that are hard to argue with are it's a technical tour 'de force and it's so brutally fast it takes your breath away. Just out of curiosity, how many of you have actually driven one anyway?

I think people who say the M6 is ugly are just mindless goons who follow one other.

There is not a thing wrong with the M6, those of you who thinks its ugly, please list what you find ugly about it.

Eh? No. Aston Martins are stunning, the 6-Series is ugly though. They aren't similar at all.

I'm not really sure how a person's opinion means they're a 'mindless goon'.

nah M6 looks cack. looks like its trying too hard and just not winning.

any aston looks better than that and probably cheaper and more prestigious with it.

sorry but if i had £82-87k to spend it would NOT be on a BMW.

*bleet*bleet*

I thought looks were subjective anyway?

Maybe you should answer his question and list what you think is so ugly about it? It's obviously something very specific as both the M6 and the Aston Martin range share the curvey body shape.

There's disliking a car and there's "omg fugly fugly fugly crap" and anyone saying the latter about the M6 would probably think a giant slab of cheese with wheels looks good.

There's nothing to list. I don't like it, that's all there is to it.

it doesnt look aggressive or smart enough for an £80k car.

it tries to be a compromise looking at it and it just doesnt work. the Z4m front end looks loads better yet is half the price...

personally i either want a classy typical posers car (aston martin? or maybe 911 turbo) or i want a snarling im-gonna-rip-your-nuts-off-and-forcefeed-them-to-you kinda car. eg mustang... but with a name so maybe the name that fits that would be a porsche GT3/ferrari 360/audi r8/?

It's dangerous getting involved in a Beemer thread, but hey. I'm feeling lucky.

I see an M6 quite often while out at work, along with a nice 911 Carrera and a sublime Vantage. Often two of the three are parked together and look very nice as well.

It's a personal thing but the M6 is not a pretty car, and as far as I'm concerned an M5 just has more kudos for those in the know (, and for those like me who like to think they are, but aren't. ;))

I see an M5 and think "Mmm, proper car." I see an M6 and think "Mmm, mid-life crisis".

Fair enough, but you can apply view to practically all sports cars. People going through a mid life crisis don't just wake up one morning and go "I know, I'll buy a BMW." If anything they're keeping Porsche in business.

Still, obviously the M6 hatred is akin to OCUK as I've seen hundreds of 6 series and M6s on the road so they must be very popular. I personally think they look great in certain colours. As for the sound, I've never heard anything that sounds anywhere near as good as the roar of the 650i (haven't heard the M6). Sounds much better than a 911 Turbo, R32 or S3. All of which I happened to hear accelerate on the same day. I personally would not get an M6 if I had £80k to spend on a car, but I still think it's great.

List of a few reasons why I find the M6 ugly.

Top of boot extends too far back
Front is too low+wide, looks like an elephant sat on it and squashed it
Headlights are too small
When viewed from the quarter, the front is just all the wrong proportions
Front can often look too long
Arches are too big one way, but don't stick out enough the other way
No interesting styling features at places like where the back meets the roof etc.

Aston Martin are in a different league as far as i'm concerned.

I don't like the new style BMWs in general, which is a shame, as I did like the E46, and for me, the 6 series is the worst of the lot, the style really doesn't transfer well to the large coupe model imo...
