So are the M5/M6 identical?

I was never a fan of the 6 series looks at all, on paper or seeing them about. But early this year a mate of mine bought one (only a 645 convertible, not exactly an M6, but still), and actually being in it, and subsequently driving it around a lot, made a heck of a difference. I now love the look of it.

And y'know, a minor point to consider is, what else looks like a 6? If you judge that based on how many people stare at you as you drive about (as they don't often see stuff like it), not much :P a 5 series on the other hand? yea...

I'm not a poser, honest. *cough*.

Anyway, only point i'm sort of making is, it's all well and good to go 'yeah i would rather have this one because of xyz finnecky detail' but until you actually experience the thing, you can't really judge it.

Fair enough, but you can apply view to practically all sports cars. People going through a mid life crisis don't just wake up one morning and go "I know, I'll buy a BMW." If anything they're keeping Porsche in business.

Still, obviously the M6 hatred is akin to OCUK as I've seen hundreds of 6 series and M6s on the road so they must be very popular. I personally think they look great in certain colours. As for the sound, I've never heard anything that sounds anywhere near as good as the roar of the 650i (haven't heard the M6). Sounds much better than a 911 Turbo, R32 or S3. All of which I happened to hear accelerate on the same day. I personally would not get an M6 if I had £80k to spend on a car, but I still think it's great.

I just prefer the M5, that's all. The M6 just doesn't have 'it'. Whatever that 'it' is.

Saying that, I'd buy an Aston and just look at it all day :) . 80k for a Beemer badge does seem a bit on the steep side, but that's never likely to be a decision I'll have to make.

Look past the damn badge for a seconds.

Its an 80k bimmer that literally keeps up with lamborghini gallardo and can do 200mph while seating 4 people.

Look at the Rs6 etc and see that the prices are equally high for the type of car it is.

There's more to the reasoning behind buying a car than just it's speed.

Y'know, things like whether you actually like the car.

If someone gave me enough money for an M6 now, i'd buy something else, regardless of whether the M6 is faster or not, because I don't like it.

And I don't see how saying £80k for a BMW is OTT, is any different to pointing out that £25k+ is maybe a tad much for a VW Golf, whether it's 'special' or not...

The M6 isn't better than the M5, just different. So why does it cost more?

The attraction of the M5 is supercar performance in a family saloon package. It's a shock to be overtaken by one. You don't expect it, but when it happens you feel total respect for the victor.

The M6 is superior in what way? Weight? Big deal. Less room in the back? great. More money? Ouch. No thanks.

Gimme an M5 anyday.

Or more likely for 95% of people, you look out the window, see a BMW badge and think 'what a knob' :p

Exactly - the M6 is nothing 'special' in that if you have £70-100k to spend, there is a plethora of fast Coupes to take your fancy. All of which are.. better.

The M5 offers something which, really, only Mercedes offer a rival for.

I think people who say the M6 is ugly are just mindless goons who follow one other.

There is not a thing wrong with the M6, those of you who thinks its ugly, please list what you find ugly about it.

The headlights look like they have missed out on factory botox and are sliding down the front bumper. The rear end then looks awkward

[/mindless goon]

The M6 is more of a status-symbol, poser's car. Hence why they get away with charging an unjustified amount for it. The M5 is more of a car enthusiast's car, surely? I think the majority of true motor fans will probably dislike the M6 where as the majority of the people who can actually afford the M6 will be more attracted to the fact it's the most expensive BMW.

And where does the normal 6 series fit in? A lot of people don't really buy cars for performance. My dad didn't even know what the BHP figure was for his 530d when he ordered it, he was more impressed by the actual car's looks and interior. He's not really a motor enthusiast as such, which provides a good example to reflect a lot of modern car buyers. A lot of people will buy cars they like the look of, or a certain brand they can trust, not which particular model goes from 0-60 the fastest.

Do you make this stuff up Tommy?

No, but people on here forget that not EVERY PERSON is a car enthusiast. It ****** me off to be perfectly honest. Not every person buying a car thinks in the same way you do.

How many of those women who buy the Mini Cooper S actually care how fast it is. They like the 'cute' look of the car. The fact is they don't really care about the performance, more the car itself. How often do you actually see a Mini Cooper S being driven aggresively? It almost feels quite akward going round one in a 1.4 Golf because they wouldn't overtake the person in front doing 30mph in an NSL.

92 posts before somebody rolled out the 'not everyone thinks the same way you do' utterly meaningless cop out phrase.

Not bad

This has.. what to do with the M6 being a 'posers car'?

My point was: A car enthusiast knows the M5 and M6 are similar in terms of performance, and as we've established a lot of people in here would pick the M5 over the M6, including Spie.

However, the fact is the M6 still sells, so someone has to be buying it? All I was saying, that a lot of people will buy the M6 because:

1) They like the design, which is obviously trying to imitate my luxurious coupes. Whether it succeeds is a matter of opinion. Such a design is obviously going to attract the usual suspects of posers, footballer’s wives etc.

2) It's the most expensive, top-of-the-range BMW and with that comes a sense of luxury. It’s nice to know you’re driving about in the best car a company offer and some people do buy cars purely to show their wealth.

Now these are just two examples of how other people might think, so please don’t be an introvert and accept that some people do not value or judge a car in the same way you, or other people here do. You would rather drive around in an old shape 530i and enjoy the performance, where as some would rather drive about in a new shape 523i instead.

Really? Are you sure? You mean... not everyone has exactly the same view on cars as me? OMG! Well fancy that.

Thanks for pointing it out dude, I had no idea :(

Well I felt I had to re-iterate it considering the last time I said that you labeled it an "utterly meaningless cop out phrase."

Hate to be picky, but Fox paid iirc about £8k for his e39, show me an e60 523i for £8k and I'll go & buy it! ;)
