Was on the hunt for a 5820k for a couple of weeks.

One came up on the bay so I bought it and it arrived this morning.

Having a closer look at it, one of the gold pads on the bottom side of the CPU is worn away to silver. After looking even more closely I spotted the resoldered capacitor at the top too..

The ad only had one photo of the top of the CPU so I wasn't aware of this until this morning.

The description read "very well looked after" and the seller has decent feedback so I didn't see any reason to doubt when I bought it.

I'm still waiting for the rest of my build to arrive so I can't test it yet. My question is, would you guys return it and ask for a refund or hang onto it and if it tests ok, keep it?

I have the sneaking suspicion the seller is a chancer in saying "I wasn't aware of this". He says he bought it from another company for his work PC. Looking at his other listings it would appear he sells refurbished components motherboards, GPU's and stuff. Every other item appears to have multiple images, where the ad for the CPU only shows the top of the CPU. He says he stress tested it before listing without any issues.

What would you guys do? Either way I'll need a CPU.

The possible advantage with this particular CPU (if it works) is it's a J batch chip, while not guaranteed is likely to be a better clocker compared to the earlier batches.

Always worth a test. the bae are pretty supportive for both seller and customer with returns so if it is faulty set up a return with them as the seller will need to prove that the cpu wasn't in that condition when he sent it out if he wants to fight you on it. Likely they'll see that there was no image of the underside so he'll have to refund it for you hopefully.

Fingers crossed it works for you.

Email the seller now and tell him if your concerns and that you will test it in x days and reserve right to return if not happy.

If you didn't pay a price reflective of the defect, back it goes. The less people selling things like this without making the buyer aware the better.

Can you get another one for the price you paid for this one?

If the answeisryes, send it back.

If the answer is no, wait until you've tested it.

Fwiw, whoever soldered that cap back on has done a top notch job - colour me impressed!

Thanks for the replies guys. The seller has acknowledged the CPU has been repaired after sending him the above image. I'm not convinced it wasn't him who repaired it.
Either way, he knew when he listed it but chose not to mention it in the listing details. Really annoys me when people do this..

He replied saying "Looks like a great solder job" and if I have any issues with it to let him know. I guess this will all go in my favour on the chance of any issue and it needing to go back.

I don't think I can mention the price I paid without breaking the rules of the forum. I paid a used price I suppose. It's hard to put value on what is and isn't a good deal, considering it won't have any warranty now. This is something I checked using the batch number before I bought and paid for it. Going by the Intel website it was a boxed CPU with warranty up until the middle of 2018.

I don't see any others going for the same price so if I return it without checking I'll end up paying more for a replacement.

I'll test it as soon as I can and see how it goes. I don't suppose I can do much else for now.

if he didnt advertise it as repaired obviously send it back unless it was cheap.

he wont have a leg to stand on.

It is used. So test it out first. Get it hot and run a ton of benches. See if it has a problem. It clearly isn't 'very well looked after'.

If it fails benches.... ask for refund. If it passes, ask for a discount, because it isn't as advertised.

This is why i only use the MM. There are just far too many wide boys on that auction site. You need to put up with all sorts of shenanigans. The last transaction i did involved someone bidding on my item, winning and then refusing to pay. No doubt they were bidding on the same item with multiple sellers and then just went with the cheapest sale.

When I mailed them to ask for payment they just replied saying they weren't paying and there was nothing I could do about it. And they were right.

I've never used the place since.

Anyway, I hope you got that for a good price and that it works out OK for you.

I wouldn't bother wasting my time testing it. Item is not as listed, seller has acknowledged this (and that it has been repaired) so send it back for a full refund. Piece of mind and all that.

Just test it.

Should be totally fine.

By switching those caps you can improve Imc. I know an Asus engineer who always does this.

Just test it at stock if it's fine save yourself the hassle.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Zipp0r you're right about the pad being covered in solder. To begin with I thought it had lost the gold coating but it would appear it's still there, just under a layer of solder.

I would have stuck to using the MM but there weren't any 5820k's for sale. I really need to get this up and running in the next week or so, I couldn't wait too much longer on the off chance of one popping up.

8 Pack that's good to know man. I'm wondering why and how the cap came off in the first place. Looking at the one below you'd really need to want to rip it from the PCB to dislodge it. The stock soldering seems pretty solid. Do the replacement caps make a huge difference to IMC potential? I guess this is only something you would want to do for LN2?

I should get the cooler tomorrow but I'm still waiting for a kit of RAM to arrive, that could be next week.

As you guys have suggested, I'll test it and even if it's working fine I'll ask for some money back.

I'll update this as soon as I can and let you all know how I get on.

I do like the MM but it does bother me that it is basically handing cash to people you haven't met but I've never had issues and 99% of the people on it are decent, better than Ebay like you say.

If it does work I'd want a good discount, say 20% off considering it is "refurbished" and not "used" along with the fact of no warranty. Could always return and buy a R7 1700 :D

I'm not sure how that differs from Ebay? Are you referring to the lack of security from the likes of PayPal buyer protection?

On the MM, you can request goods before payment if feedback score is low. You can't do that with Ebay.

What does MM refer to?

Members' Market. You'll get access when you have enough posts (you're a way aways yet!).

I think it helps that there's a participation barrier on here. You've got to put real effort in to post enough to access the MM and that would put off lots of scammers, I'd suggest. It's not a quick 'make account and sell and run' place.
