So I bought a used 5820k on the bay..

test, bench, stress - if works, keep and even then I would still ask for partial refund, even if only minor as has not been as advertised.

My mate got a mobo on bay which had a faulty ram slot, other than that working absolutely prefect and got half of his money back - ended up paying £50 for a £160 motherboard. Not like you need 32gb of ram for gaming anyway.

Ok so it's working guys but I'm struggling to do much with it at the moment.

I'm testing it on air and while I know I'm not going to get the best thermal results it's reaching 90c midway through Realbench stress test 4.2 @ 1.180v :( This is on Cryorig H5 Universal. I was really expecting the temps to be quite a bit lower.

It boots into Windows all the way up to 4.6GHz with 1.3v but I'm not going to be able to test that with a stress test.

I know these chips run hot but does this seem normal? I've reseated the cooler twice now and used two different pastes.

Honestly I'd just return it to save you the headache, I'm sure you've spent at least £200 on this and you don't want issues that can arise because you got something sold to you that hasn't been described accurately. That doesn't sound normal and you've ruled out poor HSF fitting so just return it, you'll have no issue with getting a refund from the seller, if you do just go with seller protection you'll be fine. Keep the picture you uploaded.

Yep I've decided time to send it back :( While it works, something doesnt seem right with the temps + it's looking for a lot of voltage for stability.

Time to look for a new 5820k or 6800k I suppose..

I'd try and return it too, you already have the guy admitting that it's been repaired so hopefully they will be forthcoming with a return.

Does it have high idle temps as well as load temps?

Good decision, you could always look for another, at least you know what to look out for

Good choice, I'm sure you'll find a nice 6800k somewhere, keep an eye on the MM I've seen at least 2 5820k's on their in the past month or two, it's not just the issues you have now with that chip it's been repaired and I wouldn't put much hope on it lasting very long.

I wouldn't be too wrapped up about benching it before you can fit it as you need to see if it even works and displays anything first, if this is something that cost £70 plus hell anything over 50 I'd send it back for refund straight away as that's a lot of money for hope of trigger fingers to gamble on.

Mean if you paid over 200 for it like I've just seen on a used shops site then I'd certainly send it back, that 3 letter word shop that sounds like something you do in the bedroom or wherever lol has a few in stock, but cost £240.

Send it back, no doubt about it.

The seller knows damn well that he wouldn't be getting as much money for it if he'd stated it was repaired. Hence he kept quiet. Completely dishonest.

Thanks guys. In answer to the previous question, idle was high 20's-30's and load was quickly jumping from middle 60's to 80's before peaking into the low 90's :( It's going back today and I have a 6800k on the way as a replacement.

Was more expensive than a used 5820k but it comes with a 3 year warranty and I guess I'll feel a bit better knowing it's within the top tier of a platform which will shortly come to an end.

That three letter shop as above really surprises me their prices. Great they're able to offer realistic pricing over the alternatives and act as a reference point for used pricing. I get we all want the best deal but some seem a little reluctant to accept things depreciate in value over time. Especially hardware without a warranty.

I'd return it, I would always be worrying about it.

same with me i would return as i like piece of mind
you can test it and it works but 1 month or 6 months down he line you never know and the money saved if it was cheap isn't worth the hassle and niggling doubt that your cpu was broken and has been "repaired"

Thas a good vcore to have mine working stable at 4.4 i had to pump 1.35 :/

To think there's potentially 1GHz across the board difference on the same line of CPU is so random and crazy. Would be really interesting to see a golden chip vs a complete dud compared under a microscope. The 5GHz 5820k's while incredibly rare, make the rest seem utter pants in comparison. While I was testing it at 1.180v it wasn't stable. Would have taken more than 1.2v for 4.2GHz :(

I have a great chip in my main rig which I suppose has made me even more fussy when it comes to this sort of stuff lol.

That said, the 6800k arrived this morning and while I'm hoping it's a good one I'll need to make do with it either way :) This CPU chasing has gone on long enough lol
