So I think I have finally found myself a car... First car.

Insurance would have to be £1500 cheaper than anything else for him to keep in budget lol

Ford Fiesta 1.25 is worth considering. I'd also be curious to know how a 1.8 Mondeo compares for insurance.

Fair do's...though if likes carbs then he could get one for a grand. :p

Not one worth owning.

I vaguely had a look at Minis when searching for my first car a few years ago and the examples available for £1,000 weren't just for people who like carbs, You have to like rust and turning up fashionably late (Either due to it not starting, breaking down, or the comical performance of the 1.0 lump) as well.

As somebody pointed out earlier, less money buys more car. Unless you're an enthusiast to the point where the 'What first car?' thread shouldn't need to exist because you've been dead set on a mini for as long as you can remember getting one as a first car is sheer lunacy. Should have gone the whole hog and suggested a Jag instead ;).

It is a perfect 1st car.

Remember the saxo is pretty much the same car. Should help you with more choice in your area. :)

Sounds like a sensible choice of car, and in this current climate of high fuel prices, a lot more sence than many other options.

i think you would be better off with a fiesta 1.25, at least if you do crash it you'll have a chance of surviving, unlike in a 106. terrible car safety wise, as is the saxo. youtube 106 /saxo crash test and you will not buy one!

I thought that insurance on something like a saxo was way over the top because of the amount of young drivers wanting/having them and therefore drives the cost of insurance up when compared to other small hatchbacks. Is that true?

I am sure I will find something.

Pegueot 106 1.1
Ford Fiesta 1.25
Saxo

These seem to be the ones people recommend. :)

Worth running speculative insurance quotes on something like comparethemarket to get a feel for comparative prices before you decide too firmly though, I can imagine a Saxo stinging more than a Fiesta or a 106 as they have more of an image, which may translate into worse insurance statistics. You may find something like a 306 isn't much more, which would be nicer than a 106 for example.

My first car was an 04plate 1.4 fiesta.

Lovely little car, and it was quite cheap on the insurance as well! Should be able to pick one up quite cheaply now?

As said above there also the 306 to consider, when i was looking the insurance difference to a 106 was minimal, they handle just as well (less chuckable but they have the ride that makes it feel like your driving a much bigger car and as such are more comfortable with 70mph on the motorway) really and in 1.9td or 2.0 diesel form are reasonably nippy and economical.
Give them a shot too, some have them have a lot of goodies and snazzy bits 106's wont have.
But i would say if your getting a first car you cant go wrong with
A 306/citroen xsara (same car)
a 106/saxo (same car)
a fiesta 1.25

All are great, dont write off a mondeo either, you can get some silly cheap quotes and they have a lot of comforts if you fancy a long journey.

With regards to a fiesta 1.25 or mondeo the main thing to worry about is the rear arches and sills on them
thats how they end up going in the end so one with minimal rust is always a good thing.
This is a much smaller issue on the 306 / 106.
Peugeots of that era seem to fight rust well, my 306 is 12 years old this year for instance, the only rust i can find, (ive seen underneath it on a ramp) is in the engine bay and its very minimal.
