So - is the 4850 faster than an 8800gts?

Sorry folks,

Cant find a comparison anywhere.
Does the 4850 indeed offer a performance increase over the current similarly priced Nvidea stuff?

If you play games without AA you will notice a pretty decent performance increase, if you throw in 4xAA into the mix you will still get awesome performance as the AA penalty on the 4850's is minimal. Even Crysis is playable at 1920x1200 with 4xAA on a lowly 4850 so that should give you an idea of its power.

Um, the reviews I've seen suggest they perform pretty much the same as each other with the 9800GTX+ edging ahead a bit.

My advice? Get the 9800GTX+ if it launches at same price over here.

That's expected to be more expensive, $230ish vs $199, which, fair enough isnt huge but this is the segment where every $/£ counts. It only runs 10% quicker than a 4850 a difference you can OC your way out of. ATi also has that bonous of onboard sound, to edge the pros and cons in it's favour.

i'm deducing (from reviews/benchies) that one of these isn't a worthwhile upgrade from an 8800GTX.

Aye, that's a fair assumption. The 4850 does beat the GTX in quite a few titles though, losing in some but the fact remains is that the games run fast and smooth enough on your GTX to warrant not picking up one. The 4870 with it's insane memory speeds on GDDR5 might be though. As might be the X2 4870.

Worthwhile though from an 8800gts 640mb?

I might go ahead if you guys reckon so :)

I think you should. It would be a worthwhile upgrade as the G92 GT and GTS are even deemed about 30% faster than the 640mb GTS. The 4850 is faster than my 8800GTX in most titles :).

Well you can't go wrong for half the price I bought my GTS for then can you :) Thanks!

NP and no lol, you can't go wrong here. GL with your new card :).

This has to be the budget bad boy of the year.

im running a 8800gts 320.. waiting on the 4870's tho, have a feeling it will be nearly time to trade in the old trusty 4400x2 as well

Ouch, new mobo, RAM and CPU. Maybe even a PSU on top of the 4870s price tag. :( Better get saving :).
