So what's your policy about giving money to homeless people?

Not usually, minaly because as soon as I gave them changed I felt cheated out some money. If they were really beggers, as in not wasted it in £2 vodka and fags and without the same sob story then i would. But i don't, I rather get a big issue instead of giving money to beggers.

Occasionally i drop something in their hat. Prefer to give a pound to a busker, though. I have given half a sandwich to old man who was drooling watching me eat my BLT.

My brother saw this old bloke in a wheelchair on the side of the road, looking dazed and confused. Being a nice guy, my brother took him to where he wanted to be, bought him a cup of tea and gave him the change. He turned up at the pub with a big smile and told us all his Good Samaritan story. About fifteen minutes later he looks over my shoulder and goes all red in the face, muttering obscenities......there was the old guy in his wheelchair, enjoying a pint with his mates. I had to stop my brother from walking over and tipping him out of his chair.

Are the ones that suffer from mental health problems (which is a majority) scum bag scroungers too ?, I'm not naming names but theres allot of you that seem to lack any real perceptions of what is happening down here, I say down here because so many of you live in the clouds, allot of these people don't want to be in the situation that they are in, many are ill, some have just had it hard and couldn't cope and ended up down the wrong path, we're not all strong, some people can't handle what life throws at them as well as many of you can, yes people should help themselves as well but sometimes people need a little help,

yes I give a few quid now and again to beggars, sometimes I'll give them some of my time and just sit with them and have a chat, in fact some of the most interesting people I've meet have been homeless people on the street, many are quite intelligent, one man I met last year became a alcoholic after his wife died in a house fire, he lost his home, his family, his job, and now he wonders the streets begging, it's people like this you pass on the street thinking they are scum, you should talk to some of these people and educate yourselves.

Most are addicted to whatever drug/alcohol is there downfall, EVERY begger around here ALWAYS comes into the off licence I work in and asks for 4-6 cans of special brew (spec brew crew!), which comes to £8.40,and they still ask me for change when im walking to work, dispite spending easly £90 a week on spec brew!!!. They are also known drug sellers, every single last one of them, and yes 2 of them own dogs.

SO folks, anyone thinking of giving cash to them, DO NOT DO IT, ONLY give them food/non alcoholic drinks

As for what lowrider is saying, SOME are just unfortunate, but most will lie there ass off to make you feel sorry for them, 99% of the ones around here are homeless due to drug abuse and not being strong enough to kick the habit or money mismanagement, getting in to debt by buying stuff they dont need and never being able to pay it back

I don't, im paralysed bellow knee both legs and my hands are not too good for a lot of things and this gets worse all the time as its a progresive muscle wasting condition. If I can get somewhere in life so can most people and most of those who seem to be homeless also seem to be pretty able bodied. In short I have no sympathy for them, there maybe a minority who do have a genuine reason for their position but the majority are just short of getting up dusting themselves down and getting some place better than where they are. They have no concept of self respect or of the fact that you are supposed to work for what you want.

they're homeless because they either failed at life or have gotten addicted to hard drugs, its not my fault i have a job and a house, i actually worked for my money. so no i wont give out money to anyone who is homeless, nor will i apologise and feel guilty. there are plenty of shelters out there. besides, surely they have some family to turn to for help? anyone can get a job provided you are a tiny bit presentable, which isnt hard even for homeless.

I ignore them on the streets but have a Direct Decbit with Shelter, thus giving money to an organisation that provides accomodation to homeless people. This way I can do my bit for homeless people knowing it isn't going to get spent on booze or fags and is actually going to a genuine homeless person.

I started to feel bad about giving change to one and then having to just shrug at the rest of them I walk by in Aberdeen.
Recently I've just stopped as I've become cynical after I saw 2 "homeless" folks with mobile phones sitting outside Morrisons every day.

I don't give them anything because I think that the force of individual spending is a waste, and they would probably waste it.

If you want to donate money, give it to the shelter, that can use it to buy food communally.

...........being a uni student I just can't afford it.

O ye, money from mummy and daddy to fund constant partying :p

Firm 'NO' from me as I look them in the eye. I liek catching their eye as they think that they will try and make you feel bad, thus giving into their demands. I can understand some people feeling a little guilty when they say 'enjoy your night', I normally say 'I will'.

Maybe those damn shelter/ save the bees people with their clipboards should go harrass them rather than trying to make us hard working, tax paying individuals feel bad as we arn't feeding their commission tally.

......... Actually, lock up these homeless, with the clipboard happy people and the lite/london paper handout people in a room and see what happens. I could enter it into the turner prize and win :D
